WILLIAM AND WALT: DREAMERS AND DOERS

Exploring the Lives and Legends of Two Incredible Innovators
William Francis Gibbs, the driven visionary who designed the SS United States, and Walt Disney, the legendary artist, animator, and entrepreneur, shared a similar passion, ambition, and drive. These attributes guided each man's journey to the pinnacle of their respective industries.

Conservancy Florida Chapter Chair Conor Finnegan has developed an enthralling program that chronicles and compares the lives, achievements, and dreams of these two American icons. Earlier this year, Conor delivered his presentation aboard the Conservancy's Legacy Cruise. Now we're excited to offer this insightful and engaging presentation as a FREE virtual event for all our supporters.

On Sunday, December 4 at 5:00pm ET, the Conservancy will host "William and Walt: Dreamers and Doers." The virtual event will feature Conor's presentation, and include a conversation between Conor and Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, the granddaughter of the ship's designer.
COME ABOARD THE SS UNITED STATES

Special 70th Anniversary Donor Tour Rate Available through December 7

Contest Open to Win a Ship Tour
Don't miss out on this limited-time opportunity for supporters of America's Flagship to come aboard the legendary ocean liner.

On Saturday, December 10, the Conservancy is offering a 70th anniversary supporters tour to donors ages 18-and-up who contribute $500 to help save America's Flagship.* During this unique tour, supporters will be welcomed aboard at the Big U's berth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and see many of the ship's famous spaces, including the bridge, grand ballroom, and of course, the ship's soaring, iconic red, white and blue funnels.

Along with this one-time reduced contribution rate, the Conservancy is also offering a special contest to win a ship tour. To participate, supporters ages 18-and-up should send an email to info@ssusc.org with a one-paragraph description about why the SS United States is so special and must be saved. Submissions must be received by 11pm ET on Monday, November 14. The winning submission will be eligible to attend the tour on December 10th, or another tour at a later date.

*NOTE: The deadline for this limited-time tour donation rate is Noon on Wednesday, December 7. If you can't make the December 10 tour, the Conservancy will work with you to find a mutually convenient date in 2023.
MORE FROM THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY
Only three months old at the time of the SS United States' maiden westbound voyage, Deborah Toogood-Oliver has always understood that she was part of something truly historic, even if she can't exactly remember being there.

As part of the Conservancy's 2022 Legacy Cruise, Deborah participated in a panel discussion about the maiden voyage, which featured other former passengers and crew members. If you weren't on the cruise, you can watch Deborah's commentary as part of our "Maiden Voyage Reflections" video series on the Conservancy's YouTube channel.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"As a child, my family boarded the 'Big U' at the Manhattan Terminal, crossed the great Atlantic and arrived to Le Harve. We returned from Galway to New York Harbor on the SS America. Two crossings that I’ll never forget. I was so fortunate to have had that experience of sailing those two beautiful ships."
- John K. Bahr, an SS United States supporter
