Mid-Market News and Notes

Wednesday morning, people along eastern parts of Mid-Market received flowers courtesy of the San Francisco Welcome Ambassadors. The pleasant touch is part of the Bloom SF campaign to welcome office workers and tourists back to downtown. You can also find large bouquet displays, and events like lunchtime DJs, throughout the city, including at Hallidie Plaza and Westfield Mall.

Also on Market Street, Whole Foods has opened, with significant foot traffic going in and out of the massive grocery store, which is full of goodies and worthy lunch options from the buffet and deli.

Exciting news from Proper Hotel: Villon will open again for dinner starting April 7th, the first time in two years. In the meantime, their sidewalk al fresco tapas experience, La Bande is not to be missed and makes a perfect pre-show experience.

Speaking of shows, Fefu and Her Friends by Cuban American playwright Maria Irene Fornés runs from MAR 24–MAY 1, 2022 at ACT’s Strand Theater. The ‘rapturous comedy drama’ has been called a game changer and an innovation of immersive theater. We’re hearing great things about the production, check it out! Get your tickets here.

MMBA staff are meeting with stakeholders, from property owners to independent artists, to inform our strategic planning and programs in 2022.

What's Next for the Tenderloin Emergency Initiative? While Mayor Breed did not seek an extension of the state of emergency declaration, operations launched via the initiative are slated to continue to June, with the addition of approximately 20 SFPD officers from other districts assigned to the area for a period of 30 days to mid-April. As part of the announced continuation sans declaration, the city launched a series of new dashboards related to the efforts and outcomes of the initiative. You can find the dashboards here. MMBA&F staff are working with the City as community partners in support continued focus on the neighborhood.

REDISTRICTING PROPOSALS SPLIT MARKET STREET

The most recently proposed maps put forth and approved by the Redistricting Taskforce Members and their consultants, which are tasked with deciding the new supervisor districts as part of the legal requirement to balance populations in each district every ten years, have caused considerable concern community members along Mid-Market and the Tenderloin. While the current map is not final, many have argued that it divides communities of interest within the Tenderloin, Mid-Market, and SoMa.
