Words of Wellness Wisdom

from Susan Greeley, MS, RDN,

National Director, Wellness Services

There is a long list of national health observances, and it occurred to me that May being deemed “Mental Health Awareness” month is very fitting. Have you also noticed it’s a month of mood swings? I find it bittersweet in many ways – another Mother’s Day reminding me of how blessed I am as a mother and yet missing my own mom dearly, graduations reminding me how fast it goes, another school year coming to a close and feeling a sigh of relief as life slows down for just a moment … Gardens are growing (while allergies are raging) and thankfully, we close out this manic month with a fun-filled kick-off to summer on Memorial Day weekend as we honor and celebrate fallen soldiers.

Life is beautiful indeed. I am grateful for May bringing many beautiful flowers and awareness to our mental health! There are many simple daily things we can do to balance our moods, manage and mitigate stress, and to feel happy and healthy mentally. My work revolves around helping people get and stay healthier, and that truly requires daily attention to the simple and small things, including laughing, connecting with nature, exercising, eating whole (and fresh & delicious) foods, and getting good sleep. I would like to tie it to the importance of sleep as a foundational pillar of wellness. In this newsletter, you will find the recording to our recent SENS webinar on how practicing yoga can improve one’s sleep. And while we’re all looking forward to the holiday weekend and summertime, which often means consuming more alcohol for many people which can lead to poor sleep and some less healthy cycles, I wanted to give some ideas for refreshing “mocktails” to enjoy and that may actually help you sleep better too! When you sleep better, you are more likely to eat better, to exercise, to manage moods, and thrive in your day to day.

Here's to your good sleep and mental health. Don’t forget there is no perfect sleep, let alone mental health. Therein lies so much beauty, hope, excitement, and opportunity to start each day anew.

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Thank you, Leonard Cohen.

In gratitude and wishing a happy, healthy Memorial Day weekend to all!
