The Suder Prep Rally: Cougar Pride
Suder Montessori hosted a Pep Rally the week before last to celebrate our Cheer Team and 7th/8th Basketball team and to send them off to their respective competitions/tournaments. It was such an enjoyable event. We had student and staff competitions that involved dancing and playing games. This event was a showcase of one of Suder's greatest strengths...our community!

Illinois Assessment of Readiness & Illinois Science Assessment

Illinois Assessment of Readiness
Every year, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) administers federally-required state assessments that help us gauge how our city’s students are growing academically compared to their peers across the state. These tests also help us determine where additional supports and resources are needed in our schools.
Beginning tomorrow, your child will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), which measures student mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades 3 through 8.
Children cannot study for a standardized assessment like they would for a regular classroom test, but there are ways you can help your student prepare to do their best:
- Ensure your child attends school regularly so that they don’t miss out on important instruction
- Talk to your child about testing so that they understand why doing their best is important
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before the exam
- Ensure your child arrives to school on time on the day of the exam
- Remind your child to take their time, listen to and read all directions, and tackle one question at a time
- Help your child maintain a positive mindset by reminding them of their strengths and accomplishments
Illinois Science Assessment
The Illinois Science Assessment is administered to students enrolled in a public school district in grades 5, 8, and 11 to comply with federal testing requirements. The Illinois Science Assessment will take place this Spring according to the schedules below.

Montessori at Suder Montessori
Suder Montessori is committed to continuing to develop our Montessori program through 8th grade. The Suder ALSC asked Linda Davis, Suder’s Montessori Advocate on the Suder ALSC, and three Suder teachers to present on the importance of 6th grade being in Elementary. This was solely an informational session and did not indicate any changes that will take place next school year. In fact, 6th grade will remain in Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year. We will revisit the placement of 6th grade mid-year next school year and we will get feedback from all stakeholders to inform our decision on the placement of 6th grade at Suder Montessori.
Also, I revised and presented the Suder Montessori Expansion Plan to the Suder ALSC the week before last and it reflects my plan to push the 6th grade placement discussion back to SY23. You can also view the presentation of the plan to the Suder ALSC here.

Social Emotional Learning Parent Series: Preparing for the In-beTWEEN
Suder SEL Parent Champions Chamika Jones and Macaela Bates, will be presenting our second SEL parent series on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30pm. In this presentation they'll talk about the brain and how it is affecting your child's effectiveness. Topics will range from the intrigue of the onset of puberty to the awareness of differentiation from their families of origin. They'll also offer resources to aid in the many changes taking place during this stage (for tweens and the parents who love them). Finally, they'll offer information to help recognize the typical angst associated with growing versus the emergence of social, emotional, or cognitive challenges that sometimes present themselves in school settings as more is required of the child. We would love for you to attend in person or online!

Safety During Drop-off & Pick-up
There have been several carjackings that have occurred outside of Suder Montessori. We continuously seek out support from CPD and CPS, but the issue persists. Families, remember to be mindful when dropping off and picking up students. As of lately, they have been targeting parents at 5:15pm when they are picking their children up from Music House. Please be aware and carefully watch their surroundings.

Open Books Pilsen Event: Free Book Saturday
This Saturday, March 26th, from 10am to 4pm, everything at the Open Books Pilsen store, 905 W. 19th Street, will be free to everyone!
Providing quality books to people of all ages at little to no cost is an enormous part of the Open Books Pilsen mission. All children's books are always free at the Pilsen store, and they will be lifting the "Pay What You Want" policy for all other inventory this Saturday. They will not be accepting any direct payment for the sale of books on that day. All that they ask is that patrons limit themselves to 100 books or less and make sure to checkout at the register before leaving so that we can track our impact.
They have a ton new inventory of recently published books--all unread and in perfect condition--from a large publisher that they'll be rolling out for that day!

Suder Spotlight: Room 114
We are so proud of our students and teachers in Room 114! Throughout the month of February, students selected a Black Artist that embodied a song of Black Joy. After analyzing their lyrics to learn more about the enthusiasm, resilience, strength of each individual's story, children then wrote opinion pieces on why their song was important to bringing Black Joy to the community. It was really beautiful to hear their personal expressions of these songs and the artist's stories!

Suder Spotlight: Middle School Gardening
This year gardening has sprouted in Middle School. Our oldest students have been getting their hands dirty while learning about the simple awe of nature. They began the fall outside in the Suder Peace Garden weeding, planting cold weather crops, starting seeds in the greenhouse, and helping to put the garden to bed. Then, over the winter, our adolescent gardeners continued their work indoors. They selected a gardening and ceramics curriculum during Friday Specials Electives and have been extremely busy planting and creating.
In a newly dedicated ceramics and indoor gardening room, Middle Schoolers are growing rows of basil in preparation for experiments in making pesto using a new portable kitchen. They are learning about both hydroponics and aquaponics with several dirt free growing systems, one of which is an impressive 6ft plus growing tower. The students planted varieties of lettuce in the tower for a future lesson on emulsion making their own salad dressing, and enjoying the flavors of freshly harvested produce. They are also laying the groundwork to cover the school in an avocado jungle, sprouting every seed from an avocado they eat in jars of water.
