WELCOME TO CHRIST MEMORIAL
Welcome to Christ Memorial Episcopal Church. We are devoted to following the life and teachings of Jesus, the Christ.

We hope your experience worshiping with us will bless and enrich your life.

People of all faiths are welcome to worship with us on Sunday.

During pandemic time, join us at 9:30 here.
THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOMES YOU
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.

We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church.

Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.

We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.
STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT DOBBS DECISION BY PRESIDING BISHOP MICHAEL CURRY
From June 24th, 2022
Today the Supreme Court released its decision in the case of Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The court has overturned the constitutional right to abortion that was recognized in the seminal 1973 case Roe v. Wade.
While I, like many, anticipated this decision, I am deeply grieved by it. I have been ordained more than 40 years, and I have served as a pastor in poor communities; I have witnessed firsthand the negative impact this decision will have.
We as a church have tried carefully to be responsive both to the moral value of women having the right to determine their healthcare choices as well as the moral value of all life. Today’s decision institutionalizes inequality because women with access to resources will be able to exercise their moral judgment in ways that women without the same resources will not.
This is a pivotal day for our nation, and I acknowledge the pain, fear, and hurt that so many feel right now. As a church, we stand with those who will feel the effects of this decision—and in the weeks, months, and years to come.
The Episcopal Church maintains that access to equitable health care, including reproductive health care and reproductive procedures, is “an integral part of a woman’s struggle to assert her dignity and worth as a human being” (2018-D032). The church holds that “reproductive health procedures should be treated as all other medical procedures, and not singled out or omitted by or because of gender” (2018-D032). The Episcopal Church sustains its “unequivocal opposition to any legislation on the part of the national or state governments which would abridge or deny the right of individuals to reach informed decisions [about the termination of pregnancy] and to act upon them” (2018-D032). As stated in the 1994 Act of Convention, the church also opposes any “executive or judicial action to abridge the right of a woman to reach an informed decision…or that would limit the access of a woman to safe means of acting on her decision” (1994-A054).
The court’s decision eliminates federal protections for abortion and leaves the regulation of abortion to the states. The impact will be particularly acute for those who are impoverished or lack consistent access to health care services. As Episcopalians, we pray for those who may be harmed by this decision, especially for women and other people who need these reproductive services. We pray for the poor and vulnerable who may not have other options for access. We urge you to make your voice heard in the way you feel called but always to do so peacefully and with respect and love of neighbor.

PRESIDING BISHOP CALLS EPISCOPALIANS TO
'A SEASON OF PRAYER FOR REVIVAL'
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry invites Episcopalians everywhere to mark the season after Pentecost with 30 days of prayer leading up to and encompassing the 80th General Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

“A Season of Prayer for Revival”—from June 12 through July 11—will feature daily prayers drawn from the Book of Common Prayer. Individuals can sign up online to receive the prayers and inspirational messages via email. The prayers will also be posted daily on social media accounts for The Episcopal Church and Forward Movement.

“As we move toward and adapt to a shorter, smaller General Convention, I invite every Episcopalian—whether you’re in Baltimore or Alaska or Honduras, whether you’re a deputy, a bishop, or a new member sitting in the pews—I invite all of us to pause each day just for a moment to pray for the expansive, reviving power of the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts and minds,” Curry said. “We are people of common prayer; may we embrace this season as an opportunity for us all to become a church that truly lives, looks, and loves like Jesus.”

The 80th General Convention is scheduled for July 8-11.

POETIC REFLECTIONS
OF MERRY LIGHT AND HAPPY VOICES
by Lexiann Grant

“Lumen hilare sanctae…Dignus es in tempore quovis
sanctis vocibus celebrari…”

Literal Latin Phos Hilaron portion.

The first time I truly slowed and focused my nightly prayers, and began the discipline of reading Evening Prayer, the line, “You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices” grabbed my complete attention.

This sentence comes from the Phos Hilaron, a vespers chant that could be the first hymn in the ancient Christian church. It is unique, as it is not based upon specific Scripture as so many other chants are.
I was awed by the phrase, “praised by happy voices,” and later with each succeeding line. Reading grew into liturgical prayer, and these days I often sit with each phrase in lector divina.

In the tradition of lectio divina, following are several translations.  I highlighted phrases or words that leapt out to me. Chant, pray and enjoy them.

Armenian and Russian Orthodox liturgies use similar translations, adding “alleluia” in Easter: “Joyous, holy light of the glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy, vivifying Father: Jesus Christ. Having come to the setting of the sun, we have seen this evening light.
Let us praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit of God, and together let us say, Amen.

Make us worthy for all time to bless with a voice, with a song, the name of glory of the all-holy Trinity who has given life, and for which the world glorifies thee.”

Mixed eastern Orthodox, outside of Russia:
“O Gentle Light of the holy glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed Father, O Jesus Christ: Having come to the setting of the sun, having beheld the evening light, we praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: God. Meet it is for Thee at all times to be hymned with reverent voices, O Son of God, Giver of life. Wherefore, the world doth glorify Thee.”

Roman Catholic Liturgy of the Hours hymn by Wm Storey:
“O radiant light, O sun divine of God the Father’s deathless face,
O image of the light sublime that fills the heav’nly dwelling place.
O Son of God, the source of life, Praise is your due by night and day;
Our happy lips must raise the strain of your esteemed and splendid name.

Lord Jesus Christ, as daylight fades, as shine the lights of eventide,
We praise the Father with the Son, the Spirit blest and with them one.”

If possible take some time to listen to the sung Phos Hilaron:
A hauntingly beautiful beautiful version of Phos Hilaron sung at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, San Francisco.
Orthodox Phos Hilaron sung by Valaam Monastery Choir in English. Video is of prayerful scenes from the liturgy. Here is the same version in Greek.

“Oh blazing, cheerful, holy light,” single-voice chant of Phos Hilaron in English from the Orthodox Catholic church of America; translated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Duncan.
