Highlights
CDC EXCITE Vaccination Education

Cornell Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Cornell Center for Health Equity (CCHEq), was funded for both Activity One and Activity Two of the Extension Collaborative on Immunization Teaching and Engagement (EXCITE) CDC project. Activity One (approx. $25k) will be led by Adam Hughes of Extension Administration and CCHEq. This project will partner with the CCE offices in Cayuga and Delaware counties conducting a Rapid Community Assessment (RCA) using the CDC “Vaccinate with Confidence” framework. The activity will explore vaccine hesitancy with rural adults age 21-55. Activity Two (approx. $200,000) will be led by Jen Tiffany, Executive Director of CCE-NY. The NYC work builds on the community-based COVID vaccination events CCE-NYC has been doing with the Community Healthcare Network over the last six months. EXCITE Activity Two will extend to other vaccinations, with COVID-19 as the starting point. Dr. Neil Lewis, Assistant Professor, Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medicine is a partner of Activity Two as well as the Cornell Farmworker Program, building on their partnership with Finger Lakes Community Health and their direct reach to 3,000+ Farmworkers. Questions about either project can be directed to Adam Hughes (ath66@cornell.edu) or Jen Tiffany (jst5@cornell.edu).

Health Equity in the South Bronx
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Davon Russell is a lifelong educator and mentor who believes in the transformative power of early childhood and youth education and the arts. In his work, he is a dedicated fighter for equity and opportunity for communities of color, and a thoughtful leader of a talented and committed staff that serves families and communities across the city.

Born in Jamaica to a single mother, Davon excelled early on as a scholar and athlete at the prestigious Kingston College high school and was recruited by the University of Oregon on a full track scholarship. While in Eugene, he also discovered a love of the theater as an outlet for personal expression and persuasion. After earning his BA in Humanities and his MA in Journalism and Theater, he worked as a professional actor with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Prior to becoming WHEDco’s President in 2017, Davon had long combined his love for the arts with support, guidance, mentoring and educating for youth. He began his career at WHEDco in 1997 as a part-time after school teacher and steadily rose through the organization over 20 years, serving as Executive Vice President since 2010. Under Davon’s leadership, WHEDco’s youth programs—serving infants, toddlers, school-age youth, and teens— have helped tens of thousands of young people build their skills, access resources, develop their creative and innovative potential, and become leaders.

Davon is the co-founder and Board Chair of the South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School and serves on the Boards of Bronx Lacrosse and DreamYard. He is a Captain in the founding coalition of the Bronx Community Relief Effort. He is also a member of the Racial Justice and Equity Task Force for the Weill Cornell Department of Medicine, as well as the Lehman College School of Education Professional Education Advisory Committee. He previously served on the Board of Grace Church School and was appointed by two consecutive Bronx Borough Presidents – Adolfo Carrión Jr. and Ruben Diaz Jr. – to serve eight years on the New York City Department of Education’s Community Education Council.
The Cornell Center for Health Equity (CCHEq) hosts a series of Health Equity Seminars on the first Friday of the month. Sessions are broadcasted via webinar for remote attendees. These colloquia are intended for center members to share their work on various equity focused and social justice issues as well as obtain multidisciplinary input on works in progress. Recordings of seminars are now accessible on the Cornell Center for Health Equity website.

WASHINGTON, DC USA -- HEALTHCARE UPDATE NEWS SERVICE™ -- JUNE 14, 2021: The Disparities Leadership Program (DLP) is our year-long, hands-on executive education program focused exclusively on helping health care leaders achieve equity in quality. The program is designed to help you translate the latest understanding disparities into realistic solutions you can adopt within your organization. The DSC has the unique advantage of 14 years of experience developing and implementing the DLP, the only program of its kind in the nation.

Through the DLP, we develop leaders prepared to meet the challenges of health care transformation by improving quality for populations who experience disparities. The program has three main goals:

  • To equip health care leaders with a rich understanding of the causes of disparities, the vision to implement solutions, and the strategies to transform their organization to deliver high-value health care.
  • To help leaders create strategic plans or projects to advance their work in reducing disparities in a customized way, with practical benefits tailored to every organization.
  • To create a professional learning and networking environment for leaders in health care to engage in peer-to-peer learning, crowd sourcing of ideas and strategies for reducing disparities, resource sharing, collaboration, and ongoing support in the form of a national DLP alumni network.

Complete applications are due July 9th, 2021
