As we head into the winter break, I want to thank everyone for your continued support of the Linn-Mar Community School District! Linn-Mar is truly a place where all students can succeed. Reflecting on the past few months, I am continually inspired by our students, staff, families, and community members.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the possibilities in 2024. With your continued support, I am confident that we will build upon the successes of the past and create even more opportunities for students in the future. Your partnership is invaluable, and I look forward to the continued collaboration that will ensure success here at Linn-Mar for years to come.

I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone and your families. May this time be filled with warmth, joy, and moments of togetherness. Have a very happy holiday season and a happy new year.

Sincerely,

Amy Kortemeyer

The Giving Goes On!

The third annual Hazel Point Gives Back community service project was a huge success! Almost 7,000 items were donated this year. Waypoint Services of Cedar Rapids came to collect the donations that will be used to support children and families in the area.

Thanks to the generosity of Hazel Point students and staff, the Waypoint van was filled with donated items!

Thank You

A huge thank you to Quaker for the generous donation of four pallets of food items, to the Linn-Mar Operations and Maintenance Department for transporting the donated goods; to the Linn-Mar volunteers assisting in unloading, sorting, and unboxing some of the items; and to our great staff for securing the donation! How amazing for some of our students and their families! We are grateful for such fantastic community partners.

Discipline Policy

Discipline of Students Who Make Threats of Violence or Cause Incidents of Violence

The 2023 Iowa Acts, Chapter 96 (House File 604), signed by Governor Reynolds on May 26, 2023, requires the Iowa Department of Education to develop and distribute a model policy for school districts and charter schools that, if adopted, satisfies a school district's or charter school’s responsibilities under Iowa Code 279.79 established by the Act. These model policies are intended to support a school district and charter school in meeting the requirements of new Iowa Code section 279.79 and in developing policies for different grade levels that describe how a school district or charter school may discipline a student for making a threat of violence or causing an incident of violence that results in injury or property damage or assault.

Districts are required to:

  • Publish the district policy on the district website (2023 Iowa Acts, Chapter 96 [House File 604], section 7, new section 279.79, subsection 1).
  • Provide each parent or guardian with a copy of the policy and require the parent or guardian acknowledge receipt of the policy in writing or electronically (2023 Iowa Acts, Chapter 96 [House File 604], section 8).
  • Starting in the 2024-25 school year, this will be required as part of student registration via PowerSchool.

The policy can be found here.

It is required by law that parents/guardians acknowledge the receipt of this policy through the student handbooks. Your child's building will send out the updated student handbook and a form to be completed. Please fill out the form for each building you have children enrolled in.

Holiday Cybersecurity

Many people think of the end of the year as a time of thanks and giving. But, it's also a time of taking as scammers get into the holiday spirit (maliciously, of course).

Stay safe during the busy shopping season by avoiding these common cybersecurity concerns:

  • Think before you click, and never open unexpected attachments.
  • Only purchase products from reputable sellers.
  • Avoid using free public WiFi for banking.
  • If something sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam.

Historic Highlights:

Bowman Woods Elementary

Another chapter of our great district!

In the mid-1960s, a major new housing development was planned on Cedar Rapids' northeast side. To meet the needs of the incoming families, Bowman Woods Elementary was constructed. A Cedar Rapids Gazette story from January 9, 1968, reported the school board approved a "satellite design" featuring a central unit housing administration offices, library, music, and art rooms with four classroom satellite units connected to the central building by corridors. Two additional satellite units were later added, one for an expanded library and another for a full gym. Today, Bowman Woods Elementary is led by principal Tina March and has 373 kindergarten through fourth grade students.

Winter Weather Reminders

Please remember to update your contact information in PowerSchool to receive notifications regarding weather-related schedule changes. If you need help with your PowerSchool account, please get in touch with your school office for assistance. Decisions will be made by 5:30 a.m., when possible, for late starts and cancelations.

Cold:

If the actual temperature is -15 or colder, school will be delayed or canceled. If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill advisory that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there may be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill advisory means that wind chill values are expected to fall to between -20° and -29° F.

If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill warning that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there will be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill warning means the wind chill values are expected to fall to -30°F or lower.

If the wind chill warning is in effect beyond 11:00 a.m., classes will be canceled.

Heat (and Cold):

The district has an energy-saving agreement with Alliant Energy to shut down power on the main campus should temperatures become too extreme (cold or hot). Buildings that would be directly affected by a power shutdown are Linn-Mar High School, Excelsior Middle School, Indian Creek Elementary, and the Learning Resource Center.

Snow:

School will be canceled if heavy snow and/or icy conditions make it exceedingly hazardous or impossible for school buses to travel their routes and/or for students and employees to report to school safely. Decisions and notifications will be made by 5:30 a.m., on the morning of a cancelation. As a general practice, all activities are canceled unless otherwise noted.

These general guidelines are subject to change at the Superintendent’s discretion. Each weather situation will be assessed independently.
