Facilities Management (FM) is a robust department that houses some of UNLV’s most essential services. One of the FM units that work daily to keep the university operating smoothly is the plumbing shop.

"FM plumbers service and maintain the campus's sewer, water, and storm drain infrastructure that connects to all departments,” says Dave Coleman, facility manager. "This includes ensuring we have safe drinking water for our campus life."

The plumbing team consists of skilled experts who not only take care of the plumbing system but also collaborate with other units on projects that impact students, faculty, and staff. According to Ed Barone, FM plumber 3, the team “holds many licenses, including F-cards, G-cards, GU cards, journeyperson plumbing licenses, and back-flow tester certifications."

A few of the plumbing shop’s most recent projects include assisting in remodeling the locker rooms in the Paul McDermott Physical Education Complex (MPE) and the restrooms in the Chemistry Building (CHE), Judy Bayley Theatre (JBT), and Alta Ham Fine Arts Building (HFA). Additionally, they have installed more than 70 Take Back The Tap (TBTT) hydration stations and more than 50 meters on building water mains. This sustainability effort helps collect data to save water on campus.

Effective cross-unit collaborations are contributing factors to the FM plumbers' success. It allows everyone involved to be on the same page to ensure that a project is completed on time and issues are promptly addressed.

"Communication is key to all successful collaborations," says Coleman.

The FM department supports and maintains UNLV's learning, research, and working environments, providing Top Tier service through living our Campus Values out loud. From plumbers to painters to vehicle maintenance, Facilities Management plays a crucial role in ensuring the university's most vital services are properly maintained and functional.

Celebrating Juneteenth

Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring “that all persons held as slaves… are, and henceforward shall be, free.” However, it would take winning the Civil War before this proclamation could be enforced in southern slaveholding states. During the spring of 1865, Confederate forces surrendered one by one, and Union soldiers continued marching West. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, signaling freedom for the 250,000 enslaved people in that state.

Word spread throughout the newly freed community and celebrations ensued. By the following year, June 19 was commemorated as “Jubilee Day” in Texas and as Black Texans migrated to other parts of the country, they continued their annual celebrations. In 1979, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday. Following the social justice uprisings of the summer of 2020, the holiday gained popularity. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law making Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Earlier this month, Governor Joe Lombardo signed Assembly Bill 140 making Juneteenth Day an annual state holiday in Nevada. The City of Henderson will host its Juneteenth Festival on June 16, 17 & 19 and the Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival will be held on June 17.
