A Message from The Rev. Tina Rathbone
ALL SOULS
Today the church celebrates All Souls - the day we set aside to remember those we have loved and see no longer. It can be a good thing to do – this setting aside time to remember and to dip again into our grief. But/and it feels true, too, that for many of us every day is a kind of All Souls day – full of the beauty and pain of remembering and of loss. I love the poem below because it insists on this truth – and also on the paradox that it is, finally, by becoming more and more fully alive that we are able most deeply to connect with – and to honor - those whose lives have ignited our own. God bless you all this day – and every day…. Tina xox
All Souls --- By DH Lawrence
They are chanting now the service of All the Dead
And the village folk outside in the burying ground
Listen - except those who strive with their dead,
Reaching out in anguish, yet unable quite to touch them:
Those villagers isolated at the grave
Where the candles burn in the daylight, and the painted wreaths
Are propped on end, there, where the mystery starts.
The naked candles burn on every grave.
On your grave, in England, the weeds grow.
But I am your naked candle burning,
And that is not your grave, in England,
The world is your grave.
And my naked body standing on your grave
Upright towards heaven is burning off to you
Its flame of life, now and always, till the end.
It is my offering to you; every day is All Souls' Day.
I forget you, have forgotten you.
I am busy only at my burning,
I am busy only at my life.
But my feet are on your grave, planted.
And when I lift my face, it is a flame that goes up
To the other world, where you are now.
But I am not concerned with you.
I have forgotten you.
I am a naked candle burning on your grave.

Thank you for an amazing growing season!
Volunteer hours are on hold until next spring.
Once the bridge opens (hours? days? minutes?) we hope you'll have an excuse to drive by and spot our new greenhouse structure in progress.
Thanks to Taft Farms and North Plain Farm we are able to continue gleaning curly kale, tuscano kale and collards, 100 bunches per week, for free to our community.
Enjoy the last of the fall leaves, lasting warm breezes and lightly frosty mornings. We are surrounded by such a graceful transition of apparent life to dormancy.

Babies are placed in the Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.
It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana
at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome Table or send a check to:

Hi all:
Our discussion of the second part of Stephanie Spellers' The Church Cracked Open, led us to the metaphor of 'being at sea.' Our reflection resulted in the following prayer:
Reconciling God, who cracks us open, and challenges us
to live with people who are different
We confess our blindness, discomfort, and feeling of being lost
We deny there is a way out of our pain.
Forgive us.
At sea, we place our hope in the dove with the olive branch
Through your love draw us all together
In your Holy Spirit, let us embrace each other and live in beloved community.
AMEN

Luke 6:20-31
Jesus looked up at his disciples and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
“Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets."
"But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
"Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
"Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.
"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.
"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
| Ye watchers and ye holy ones |
This hymn tune, a personal favorite, was written/arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This month there have been celebrations of the 150th anniversary of his birth. His work on The English Hymnal in 1906, revised in 1933 was foundational to our own hymnals 1940 and 1982. Our present hymnal has 24 hymns written or arranged by him. All Saints Day is often a RVW festival, and this Sunday is no exception as we will also be singing For all the Saints.

Ye watchers and ye holy ones,
bright seraphs, cherubim, and thrones,
raise the glad strain, Alleluia!
Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers,
virtues, archangels, angels' choirs:
Refrain:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
2 O higher than the cherubim,
more glorious than the seraphim,
lead their praises, Alleluia!
Thou bearer of th' eternal Word,
most gracious, magnify the Lord:
Refrain
3 Respond, ye souls in endless rest,
ye patriarchs and prophets blest,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Ye holy twelve, ye martyrs strong,
all saints triumphant, raise the song: Refrain
4 O friends, in gladness let us sing,
supernal anthems echoing,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
To God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Spirit, Three in One: Refrain

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
