"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."

Galatians 5:1

The 4th of July is the day that we celebrate liberty for all. I hope you have a wonderful 4th.

God bless you and your family and may God Bless America.

Happy 4th of July

July 4, 1861 Senate Prayer

The following prayer was offered by

Rev. Byron Sunderland, D.D.

Almighty and everlasting God, be not angry with us for our sins, which we only confess and deplore; but pardon our offenses and extend to us Thy favor. We thank Thee for Thy goodness on this anniversary of the nation a day tenfold more precious by reason of our present troubles, and sacred to the heart for the ever memorable Declaration of our fathers, in which Thou didst begin more openly to give us a name among the nations of the earth.

We thank Thee for all Thy manifold and abundant mercies hitherto to make our nation exceedingly great and glorious; but now disasters have befallen us and darkness broods in the land. And now we ask Thy mercy as the Senate is convening at a most momentous crisis of our history. Give to Thy servants all needed help. Add to their deliberations, wisdom and unanimity, and profit and speed to their conclusion. Bless Thy servant, the President of the United States, our veteran Commander-in-Chief, and all that have functions in the civil and military power. May the angel of Thy presence walk in the Cabinet and in the Congress and in the camp, to go before, to purify, and to direct the now greatly and universally-awakened love of country.

And we beseech Thee to guide us, to overrule and order all things, and so to cause that nothing shall fail, that the disorders of the land may be speedily healed, that peace and concord may prevail, that truth and righteousness may be established, and that Thy Church and Kingdom may flourish in a larger peace and prosperity, for Thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Market Recap

For the week, the DJIA lost 403.42 points, or 1.28%, to close at 31,097.26. The S&P dropped 86.41 points, or 2.2%, ending at 3,825.33. The Nasdaq fell 479.78 points, or 4.13%, closing at 11.127.84.

Manufacturing activity in the Mid-Atlantic region unexpectedly continued to fall in June well below the consensus, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

The U.S. economy contracted slightly more than previously estimated in the first quarter amid a record trade deficit and supply chain disruptions, government data showed on Wednesday.

Fed Powell says that the Federal Reserve will not let the economy slip into a "higher inflation regime" even if it means raising interest rates to levels that put growth at risk.

U.S. consumer confidence fell sharply in June as worries about high inflation left consumers anticipating economic growth would weaken significantly in the second half of the year.

The U.S. trade deficit in goods narrowed in May as exports increased strongly, suggesting that trade could contribute to economic growth in the second quarter for the first time in nearly two years.

For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Bureau of Economic Analysis has reported a decrease in real gross domestic product (GDP).

The Chicago PMI fell to 56.4 in June from 60.3 in May. Other manufacturing data already released have suggested slower growth or outright contraction.

Wall Street slid into the finish line of a dismal month and quarter on Thursday as a continued sell-off put a grim punctuation mark at the close of the S&P 500's worst first-half in more than half a century.

Economic data released on Thursday did little to allay fears. Disposable income inched lower, consumer spending decelerated, inflation remained hot and jobless claims inched higher.

Energy is the sole sector to show a year-to-date gain, aided by crude prices spiking over supply concerns due to Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Friday Recap: Wall Street Gains But Caution Prevails

U.S. investors turned net sellers of equity funds in the week ended June 29, as they fretted over the impact of hefty rate increases on the U.S. economy, with data showing a contraction in the first quarter.

U.S. manufacturing activity slowed more than expected in June, with a measure of new orders contracting for the first time in two years.

Record-high inflation is having a traumatic impact on the U.S. economy and small business owners, with two new surveys charting the depth and scope of how the unwelcome new normal has disrupted operations.

New U.S. data for May showed little immediate relief from the record pace of inflation pushing the Federal Reserve toward another oversized interest rate increase next month.

U.S. construction spending unexpectedly fell in May as single-family homebuilding stalled, more evidence that the Federal Reserve's aggressive monetary policy tightening was slowing the economy.

U.S. mortgage lenders, refinancing companies and real-estate brokers may lay off thousands of employees in the coming months, industry sources said, as many Americans put off buying a home.

U.S. Labor Department data on Thursday showed unemployment benefits rolls remained near their lowest in decades.

Gold had a weekly dip to $1,804.20 on Friday enroute to a third straight weekly dip as a firm dollar and looming rate hikes soured appetite for the non-yielding asset.

Spot silver fell 2.5% to $19.78, and has dropped about 6.7% this week, its biggest weekly fall since Jan. 2022. Spot platinum       slipped 2% to $879.70 per ounce for a fourth consecutive weekly fall. Palladium rose 0.7% at $1,966.50, gained a bit over 3% this week. Copper also dropped to $3.64.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 321.83 points, or 1.05%, to 31,097.26; the S&P 500 gained 39.95 points, or 1.06%, ending at 3,825.33; the Nasdaq Composite climbed 99.11 points, or 0.90%, closing at 11,127.84.

For the week, the DJIA lost 403.42 points, or 1.28%, to close at 31,097.26. The S&P dropped 86.41 points, or 2.2%, ending at 3,825.33. The Nasdaq fell 479.78 points, or 4.13%, closing at 11.127.84.

Biden Says Americans Will Pay High Gas Prices ‘As Long As It Takes’ Until War Ends

Republican lawmakers were quick to call Biden out for ignoring calls to open up domestic oil production, which they say will bring relief to struggling Americans…

Chris Lange, FISM News

President Biden said American drivers will endure pain at the pump for “as long as it takes” until Russia is defeated in Ukraine.

The president made the remarks at a press conference in Madrid on Thursday after the wrap-up of a three-day NATO summit. During a rare Q&A session with reporters, Biden was asked how long Americans can expect to continue to pay record-high gas prices.

“As long as it takes,” he replied, adding, “Russia cannot, in fact, defeat Ukraine and move beyond Ukraine.”

“This is a critical, critical position for the world,” he continued, once again blaming high gas prices on Russia’s war…(READ MORE)

Ivy League School Barred White, Asian Students from New Course; Student Pushes Back

“This results in certain demographics being favored over others and is discriminatory,” the student wrote.

Chris Lange, FISM News

A Brown University student has accused the Providence, Rhode Island Ivy League school of barring white and Asian students from a new course, as first reported by The Daily Wire

The student alleges that Brown offered a new teacher training class on mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) that was open only to BIPOC students who identify as black, indigenous, or Latino. The student, whose name has been redacted from the complaint, was denied entry in the course for failing to meet the race-based…(READ MORE)

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer Retires

Judge Jackson will now serve when the next term begins.

Samuel Case, FISM News

Liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer officially stepped down from the bench at noon on Thursday, calling his time on the high court a “great honor.”

At 83, Breyer is the oldest justice to serve on the court and is second the longest-serving justice, behind conservative Justice Clarence Thomas. Breyer was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1994.

The liberal justice announced in January that he would retire at the end of the current…(READ MORE)

FBI Begins Massive Investigation Against Roman Catholic Priests in New Orleans

In the flurry of pedophilia accusations against clerics in the Church in Rome, this news is, unfortunately, becoming all too common.

Seth Udinski, FISM News

Wednesday, the Associated Press issued a report highlighting a massive new FBI investigation against Roman Catholic priests in New Orleans. Like so many other previous reports, the priests are being accused of sexually abusing children.

According to the AP report, over 12 victims of abuse have come forward in the last year alone. One anonymous victim who was abused as a boy in the 1970s said recently, “It’s been a long road, and just the fact that someone this high up believes us means the world to us.”

The report also revealed that all major parties involved, including the FBI and the Archdiocese of New Orleans, have thus far refrained from commenting to the press…(READ MORE)

Air Force Drops Misconduct Charges against Unvaccinated Officer

The military must follow clear religious accommodation policies according to the Religious Freedom Act.

Lauren Moye, FISM News

Military service members gained another small victory for medical and religious freedoms on Tuesday as the Air Force dropped charges against an unvaccinated officer. Master Sergeant Vincent White faced an article 15 punishment for his refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccination mandated for all military officers.

At his rank, White risked a week’s worth of pay or up to seven days of correctional custody, among other punishments by taking his stand for medical freedom. However, according to a June 28 press release sent by his attorney representative R. Davis Younts, the Air Force “will withdraw the punishment” and “drop the allegation” rather than take the case…(READ MORE)

Revised GDP Drop Brings Concerns of 2023 Recession

...predicted that the economy will slow “sharply from 2.3% in 2022 to 1.3% in 2023 with growth falling below stall speed growth in mid-2023.

Ian Patrick, FISM News

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the United States in the first quarter of 2022 was lower than originally expected, further stoking fears of recession by the beginning of 2023.

The U.S. Commerce Department revised their data for Q1 2022, showing a 1.6% decline compared to a previously reported 1.5% decline. While this may not seem like a big change, Lead U.S. Economist at Oxford Economics Lydia Boussour says it is still an indication that “the economy carried less momentum than previously thought heading into Q2.”

According to a writeup from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), this decrease in real GDP is due to a multitude of…(READ MORE)

CRISPR- A Decade of Use

The University of Pennsylvania has tested the safety of the technology in clinical trials where researchers used CRISPR to remove genes that allow cancer cells to avoid the immune system.

Lauren Dempsey, FISM News

MS in Biomedicine and Law, RN

This month marks ten years since Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna published research on gene editing. A decade ago this new technology was on the cutting edge in the world of science. CRISPR opened the door to allow geneticists to edit parts of the human genome by deleting or changing parts of the DNA sequence, especially for medical conditions rooted in a genetic cause.

CRISPR works by using an enzyme called Cas9 and a piece of RNA. Cas9 essentially acts as scissors that cut a strand of DNA at specific locations to remove or add pieces of DNA. The process uses a sequence of RNA that then binds to DNA, guiding the Cas9 enzyme to the correct place in the genome to make edits. The cell then responds to the DNA that has been damaged and tries to repair itself.

Gene editing promises a wealth of potential benefits- especially the CRISPR method as it is fast, cheap, and easier than other methods of gene editing. Many studies and clinical trials are currently underway…(READ MORE)

Arizona Passes Universal School Choice Bill Giving 1.1 Million Students Access to the School of Their Choice

Democrats and the largest teacher’s union in Arizona both oppose the measure.

Matt Bush, FISM News

Arizona lawmakers passed a bill last week that granted the 1.1 million school-age children in the state access to the school of their choice. That means that anyone, from the time they start kindergarten to the day they graduate high school, can pursue the educational option that best suits them — whether it be private, home, or public schooling while receiving tax funds to do so.

The bill, HB2853, grants every family in Arizona eligibility for an already existing program called the “Empowerment Scholarship Account” (ESA). The ESA program was, “initially designed for disabled, military, or failing students. The program grants families $6,500 in tuition annually per child for private or home schools or learning pods.”

The Goldwater Institute started the ESA program in the state in 2011 and in just over a decade the program went from serving around 100 students to serving over 10,000 …(READ MORE)

Senate Republicans, Democrats Propose Competing Student Debt Relief Bills

Republicans argue that massive student debt forgiveness would only serve to worsen and lengthen the mass inflation currently being endured.

Willie R. Tubbs, FISM News

This week, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) headed a team of Republican senators that introduced a bill that would effectively end progressives’ quest for blanket federal student loan forgiveness if passed. However, this bill has competition on the moderate left.

If progressives’ goal of total student debt forgiveness is the far left of the issue, the Debt Cancellation Accountability Act would certainly qualify as the most conservative.

Scott, along with Sens. Cynthia Lummis (Wyo.), Mike Braun (Ind.), and John Barrasso (Wyo.), are pushing for a law that would require the Department of Education to seek an appropriation from Congress in order to forgive the debt of…(READ HERE)

Following The Money: Are Republicans Merely ‘Pro-Birth’?

According to John Tamny, writing for RealClearMarkets, Republicans tend to put their money where their mouth is, far out-giving their liberal counterparts.

Samuel Case, FISM News

Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who serves as the Senate GOP campaign chief, is calling on his fellow Republicans to show their care for struggling mothers now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

“[Republicans must] do everything in our power to meet the needs of struggling women and their families so they can choose life,” Scott said according to the AP.

Democrats and abortion advocates have long accused conservatives of being merely “pro-birth,” not actually pro-life. This talking point is typically accompanied by a laundry list of progressive social programs that conservatives must support to be considered “truly pro-life,” including universal healthcare and…(READ MORE)

Voicemail Undercuts Biden’s Claims He Knew ‘Nothing’ of Hunter’s Lucrative Foreign Business Dealings

Some wonder if this tragedy will be pushed to the wayside by the liberal media, which has no ulterior motives for covering a story about a white youth pastor dying in police custody...

Chris Lange, FISM News

A newly-discovered voicemail appears to contradict President Joe Biden’s repeated claims that he knew “nothing” about his son’s foreign business dealings and was aware they were improper.

The contents of a 2018 voicemail, discovered on a cell phone backup in Hunter Biden’s infamously-abandoned laptop, reveal that Joe Biden called his son to discuss a New York Times story about the younger Biden’s business ties with Chinese oil giant CEFC, telling him, “I think you’re clear,” according to a Daily Mail report.

“I thought the article released online, it’s going to be printed tomorrow in the Times, was good,” Joe Biden said, according to…(READ MORE)

FDA Recommend Upgrading COVID-19 Vaccine Strain

a recent study from Israel suggests that COVID-19 vaccines could negatively impact fertility in men.

Lauren Dempsey, FISM News

MS in Biomedicine and Law, RN

On Thursday the FDA announced a recommendation to change the current vaccine strain used in COVID-19 vaccines for booster doses. The agency stated in a press release that this “is necessary for the 2022 fall and winter seasons.” The updated recommendation comes after the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee met on Tuesday to discuss the need for potential changes.

The FDA maintains that vaccine safety and efficacy are “critical” in protecting against COVID-19 infection especially “against circulating and emerging variants to prevent the most severe consequences of COVID-19.” The FDA made this recommendation after the advisory committee voted to include a SARS-CoV-2 omicron component in COVID-19 vaccines that would be used for boosters beginning in the fall…(READ MORE)

4th of July Cookout Fare Up Nearly 20%

Chris Lange, FISM News

A year after President Biden bragged that he helped Americans save $0.16 cents on their Fourth of July cookouts, a new report indicates that the price of the country’s favorite Independence Day fare has shot up 17%.

A new American Farm Bureau Federation “marketbasket” survey shows that the average cost to feed 10 people with Independence Day staples like hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, and ice cream over the holiday weekend will cost $69.98, up $10 from last year.

“Despite higher food prices, the supply chain disruptions and inflation have made farm supplies more expensive,” AFBF Chief Economist Roger Cyran said, pointing out that “farmers are feeling the price-point pain...(READ MORE)

Ukraine War Update: U.S. to Expand Military Presence in Europe, Macron Calls Mall Attack ‘New War Crime’

The stepped-up attacks follow a missile strike on a shopping mall in central Ukraine that killed at least 18 people Monday.

Chris Lange, FISM News

President Biden told assembled NATO leaders Wednesday that he is expanding the U.S. military presence in Europe. This will include establishing a permanent headquarters in Poland, dispatching two additional F-35 fighter jet squadrons to the U.K., and sending more “air defense and other capabilities” to Germany and Italy. Biden said the U.S. will also shore up its military assets in Romania and the Baltic region.

“NATO is strong and united, and the steps we’re taking during this summit, we’re going to further augment our collective strength,” Biden said Wednesday.

Army Drops Diploma Requirement Amidst Recruiting Shortfall

The military also faces challenges from the increasingly competitive jobs market due to the ongoing labor shortage in the country.

The U.S. Army will no longer require recruits to have a high school diploma or GED in order to enlist in an effort to combat the military’s worsening recruitment crisis.

According to Military.com, enlistees will now be able to join the Army as long as they are 18, meet all other eligibility requirements, and go to basic training before Oct. 1, the start of the military’s next fiscal year. McConnell Blasts Biden for ‘Attacking’ Supreme Court

Biden’s comments on the Supreme Court have been increasingly inflammatory, especially since its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Ian Patrick, FISM News

President Biden’s rhetoric against the recent decisions from the United States Supreme Court has drawn the attention of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is accosting the president for what he calls “attacks on the Court.”
