Susanville Fire Department Holding

Annual Open House October 12th

It’s time for Fire Truck Rides! October is National Fire Prevention Month and the Susanville Fire Department is inviting everyone to stop by for their fun-filled, family-oriented annual Open House at the Fire hall on Main Street on Saturday, October 12th.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Month is, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” and the folks at the Susanville Fire Department will be helping to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

The free, fun, family-oriented event will give everyone a chance to meet our local firefighters with hands-on activities, fire engine rides, equipment displays, the fire safety trailer and food and refreshments.

Did you know?

Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely.

The SFD offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.

Plan ahead for your escape. Make your home escape plan and practice today. Follow this link to the National Fire Prevention Week website for more information about creating home escape plan.

The event, which runs from 10:00a.m. until 2:00p.m., will feature demonstrations, tours, fire engine rides, prizes and giveaways.

The Susanville Airport from above in the late 1940’s

Flying Sportsmen Tell Adventure

October 2, 1950

Three San Rafael hunters flying in two planes to Ravendale Saturday night, lost their way and had an adventure.

Two of them felt their way down at the Susanville field at dusk and were given a friendly welcome by Dave and Mary Barr, airport managers who had been out there praying for their safe landings.

The third pilot met with a sterner fate – he landed at Herlong was treated with grave suspicion and asked to leave immediately.

Pleading his innocence as a spy, the hunter explained the danger of night flying in these parts and was allowed to stay the night. He was asked to leave before daybreak and just before dawn he took off for Ravendale.

His companions found him at Ravendale Sunday morning and after a day of unsuccessful hunting they returned to San Rafael Sunday night.

The visiting pilots were Rube Henrickson and Harry Kellison landed in Susanville and Max Hamenover who came down in Herlong.
