Youth Workforce Lunch and Learn

December 1, 2023 - 12:00 p.m.

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce

Conference Center or Via Zoom

306 High Street, Cambridge, MD

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce Education Committee is teaming up with the new Dorchester County Public Schools Career Coaches to hold an information sharing session for all employers in Dorchester County. The Youth Workforce Lunch and Learn session is set for Friday, December 1, 2023, at Noon. The objective of the event is to help local businesses learn how to tap into the capable workforce found right here in our high schools. The session will cover multiple options for getting students engaged in the workforce while they are still attending high school.

The challenge with an adequate workforce is listed in the top three issues facing almost every business in the State of Maryland. We have a relatively untapped source of labor in our schools with the desire to learn and build job skills for their futures. We just need to make the connection between the employers and students in a way that works with student interests and educational needs. The Chamber believes the Career Coaches will be instrumental in making that happen.

“We are very excited about the creation of the new Career Coach roles at DCPS.” says Joel Bunde, Chair of the education committee. “They will be a tremendous resource for our students and a great asset for the business community as we work to solve the workforce challenges we face today.”

Over the past four years the Chamber has been working with DCPS and the State Department of Labor to help get the Youth Apprentice Program launched. While covid slowed progress, the program is now at a point where it can truly have a significant impact on the career development of our youth and a huge impact on the local workforce. The addition of Career Coaches within DCPS is going to be a catalyst for the growth of the program. There are many success stories locally and across the state for the Youth Apprentice Program already. The more students and businesses that get engaged in the program the faster we will realize improvements in our local workforce. It will be one of the key topics at the Lunch and Learn.

There are other ways to engage students and help with their career development and improved employability and those will also be discussed during the session. Some examples include internships (paid and unpaid), job shadowing, summer/seasonal employment, and just straight hiring a student while understanding and respecting the hours they are able to work while still in school.

The session will be held in the Chamber Conference Center and will have a webinar option for those that cannot make it to the in-person event. Lunch will be provided for those who attend in-person. There is no charge for the event, but you must register for either the in-person or online option.

Giving thanks by giving back, all year long

655bb191244d7 image

“It takes this whole community for us to be able to do what we do, and they’ve been so generous, but the need is growing as the economy changes; the need is greater than I think I’ve ever seen it in all my years serving in the Salvation Army,” Captain Wendy Parsons says.

The familiar sights of red kettles and ringing bells have returned, again ushering in the season of giving. But for the Salvation Army and it’s legion of community ‘angels,’ there’s no beginning or end to the mission of lending a hand.

As Parsons noted, “we’re always, always busy here.”

There’s the perpetual call to provide safe haven and meals for homeless residents at the Robert and Grace Bair Overnight Shelter, located behind the church and offices building at 200 Washington Street in Cambridge.

It’s a call often answered by individuals, businesses, and organizations which selflessly step up, filling in the open dates on the shelter’s meal calendar.

Promoting the Heritage of the Heart of the Chesapeake in Dorchester

On November 2, the Heart of the Chesapeake Country Heritage Area annual awards ceremony was held at the Dorchester Center for the Arts in Cambridge. Two individuals and three organizations or projects were recognized for their outstanding contributions over the past year in promoting the culture and traditions of this part of the Eastern Shore. It marked another successful year for the HCCHA, which continues to play a major role in celebrating and developing what’s great about the extended community.

In concert with public and private partners, the Heart of the Chesapeake Country Heritage Area helps people, groups, and government entities preserve and promote the unique historic, cultural, and natural resources of Dorchester County. It’s core mission is to make the positive effect of heritage tourism on the local economy broader and deeper. The HCCHA is managed by the Dorchester County Tourism Department, which relies on the county government for staff, offices, and funding.

When Natalie Chabot left the tourism director position in Allegheny County to take over the one in Dorchester in 2001, a plan had already been made for creating a heritage area here, but it was still in draft form and not in great shape. Fortunately, Natalie had a solid advisory committee to work with, and they commenced the project in earnest.

The community was required to designate boundaries for the heritage area; they at first wanted to make it the whole county, but Maryland preferred to keep the areas smaller. It does encompass the majority of Dorchester, with Cambridge, Church Creek, Vienna, Hurlock, East New Market, and Secretary within the borders, as well as portions of the waterways that surround the county on three sides.

DCHS hopes to highlight info from local churches at special event

CAMBRIDGE — On Wednesday, November 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., author Paul Yoder will visit the Dorchester County Historical Society in Cambridge to share details from his new book: Maryland’s Eastern Shore Historic Churches.

Twenty-three churches of Dorchester are included in this photo documentary. Visitors are encouraged to attend Yoder’s presentation and pick up their own copy of his book that evening. The evening will also serve as a chance to see what information the DCHS has to share regarding churches across the county.

In December, DCHS’ unique church plate display, which features about forty-five different plates in total, will be moving into storage to make way for a new display on one-room schoolhouses. The Church Night event will be an opportunity to view the plates before they are put into storage.

Annual Crab Basket Christmas Tree Lights Up Downtown Cambridge for the 10th Consecutive Year

65651f2ed31f6 image

CAMBRIDGE, MD — In a time-honored tradition that has become a staple in Dorchester County, volunteers gathered once again in downtown Cambridge to assemble the iconic Crab Basket Christmas Tree. This cherished event, now in its 10th year, stands as a testament to the community's rich maritime heritage.

Standing tall at 22 feet, the unique Christmas tree is a collaborative effort that involves strategically stacking 200 crab baskets generously donated by J.M. Clayton's Seafood Company. The baskets, symbolic of the region's strong ties to watermen and the traditional practices of fishing and crabbing, form the structural core of the festive creation.

Enhancing the visual spectacle are energy-efficient LED lights that adorn the tree, casting a vibrant glow over downtown Cambridge throughout the holiday season. Adding an eco-friendly touch, recycled buoys sourced from the Chesapeake Bay contribute to the tree's overall charm.

Seminar Focuses on Trends in Pancreatic Cancer Care

2023UMMSPancreaticCancer image

Pancreatic cancer is a relatively rare cancer, representing only 3 percent of estimated new cancer diagnoses each year. However, it is especially lethal – presently the 3rd leading cause of cancer death, pancreatic cancer kills more than 50,000 Americans every year.

For the Mid-Shore Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Inc., supporting efforts to advance the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer, and educating the public about risk factors and symptoms of the disease are key strategies for saving lives. On this year’s World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day (November 16), the Foundation sponsored a seminar, “New Trends in Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment,” in the Cadby Theatre at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Md.

Designed for clinicians involved in patient care, the evening program featured presentations by three leading University of Maryland Medical System oncology specialists: Nader Hanna, MD, Professor of Surgery, UM School of Medicine (UM SOM) and Director of Clinical Operations, Division of General & Oncologic Surgery, University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC); Yixing Jiang, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, UM SOM and Director of GI Medical Oncology, Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, UMMC; and Jason K. Molitoris, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, UM SOM, Associate Medical Director, Department of Radiation Oncology, UMMC, and Director, Clinical Hyperthermia Program.

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional lights holiday star in memory of Maryland State Police Trooper Eddie Plank

StarBeingConstructed image

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional has again constructed its holiday star decoration atop the hospital. The unique star, measuring 22 feet from tip to tip, will be lit on the Friday after Thanksgiving and remain illuminated throughout the holiday season. The star has been the centerpiece of TidalHealth Peninsula Regional’s holiday decorating theme for the last 28 years.

In 1995, following the death of Maryland State Police Trooper First Class Edward A. Plank, Jr. who was lost in the line of duty, TidalHealth Peninsula Regional began dedicating the lighting of the star each year in Trooper Plank’s memory. It also serves as a tribute to the hospital’s close working relationship with local emergency responders and law enforcement officers on the Delmarva Peninsula.

All that Glitters Reception

A Women's Metalsmith Collective Reception

Main Street Gallery is thrilled to announce that “All That Glitters: A Women’s Metalsmith Collective” returns to the Cambridge art co-op to present a dazzling showcase of jewelry and artwork! The seven talented Eastern Shore metalsmiths and glass artists showed at the gallery last year and will exhibit again alongside Main Street Gallery’s twelve member artists. The exhibition will be open to the public until December 31 with reception, on December 9 from 5-8 pm. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

The seven exhibiting jewelry and glass artists include Cindy Ayd, Jeanne Barr, Melissa Kay-Steves, Alexa Matthai, Robin Morgan, Linda Starling and Barbara Trower. As they did last year, each artist will be showing numerous pieces of exquisitely hand-fabricated jewelry and sculpture in sterling and fine silver and semi-precious and fused glass.

This eclectic group of women met while taking classes in metalwork at Charmtree Jewelry Studio in Stevensville which is owned by Melissa Kay, one of the exhibitors. While they come from many different backgrounds and careers, they have found their bliss in jewelry-making and glass work.

It was early in 2022 that local artist, Linda Starling, who is a member of Main Street Gallery and who specializes in beach glass and silver jewelry, envisioned a holiday show at MSG with her Charmtree classmates. She says that after taking classes and working alongside all seven women and watching them grow not only in artistry but in friendship, she thought a show together might be an exciting next step. That first show was so successful that the artists decided to try it again and are happy to show together once more. Linda explains that these classmates have become an important network for her and each other. They routinely share ideas and new techniques and while working together they continually challenge each other. The extra added bonus, she says, has been the lasting friendships they have formed. Through their classes the artists have learned or improved upon their skills in fabrication, metal clay, soldering, enameling and more and all have continued in their education taking online classes and traveling to learn from some of the best in the jewelry industry.

Main Street Gallery is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 to 5 and online shopping is always available at: mainstgallery.net. The gallery is located at 518 Poplar St. and is Cambridge‘s only artist-owned and operated cooperative. The gallery is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. Please contact them through their website or by calling 410–330–4659 if you are interested in being part of this vibrant artist community.
