Pampered Chef Fundraiser: Big Hit!
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Our first ever Pampered Chef party went exceedingly well. We want to thank everyone who took the time to purchase products, share information about the fundraiser with friends and family, and interact on the Facebook party page. We hope everyone is enjoying their new merchandise, maybe even whipping up some goodies from the GSRNE cookbook! Susan, our consultant and fellow GSD owner, made everything so easy with a well-organized program. She even donated a substantial portion of her commission to the rescue! We don’t have the exact totals just yet, but we know we will receive a minimum of $750 for the dogs. Thank you all again, and we are thrilled with this success!
With gratitude,
Tina, Karen, and Kathy

Happy Tails: Tova
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Tova (GSRNE #481) was adopted by Lynn in 2017. She was then about seven years old so was a senior dog and was also first a foster dog in Lynn’s home. While fostering, Lynn noticed that Tova seemed so in tune with her that she ended up adopting her after about six months. Tova is 12 years old now and showing her age a little bit. She has trouble with long flights of stairs sometimes but spends a lot of time in her favorite spot – on a chaise lounge at the living room window – where she can bark all day at anything that moves. Tova seems to have an amazing life. She goes hiking with Lynn, running ahead a little way and looking back to check on Lynn and waiting for her to catch up, basically having a good time and keeping track of Lynn at the same time. They go to Swift River where Tova can still go in the water. In fact, she loves water so much, one of her favorite activities is playing in the backyard baby pool. She jumps in and out of the pool, “attacks” the water, and will sit in front of a hose mister, just enjoying life around water on hot summer days. Tova’s most favorite thing seems to be Lynn.
|
Whenever Lynn comes home, Tova will frolic, running and prancing around and moving her head like a teenage girl flipping her hair. She is so excited to see Lynn come home. They are enjoying life together. Lynn will sometimes have Tova’s nails painted hot pink so that she is not mistaken for a male dog when they are out, which does happen on occasion. Tova lets Lynn know what she wants by whining or just putting her head on the mattress where Lynn is resting.
|
It usually means she needs food or a trip outside to the restroom. Tova follows Lynn from room to room and even keeps track of her when they are in the same room, following her with her eyes. She is a soothing presence as well, however, and Lynn tells us she is grateful every day that she has Tova, that she is awesome, adorably cute, and so loyal. While there may be bumps sometimes, it seems Tova has found a perfect home later in her life. We received picture after picture of Tova enjoying life – in the baby pool, in front of the mister, posing at Christmas, resting with her food bowl, in the car, in (and at) the river, on the snow, and with the flowers – what a wonderful life!

Take Me Home: Cookie
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Cookie is a beautiful, affectionate 9-month-old. Energetic and armed with that wonderful puppy curiosity, she loves her toys and chasing after her foster brother. When she came into her foster home, her world seemed scary, and she needed some time to get used to her new surroundings.
Slowly she realized she was safe and became more confident exploring. Her foster mom is socializing her with people and other dogs. Cookie loves her foster brother, who is a GSRNE alum, and things are less scary to her when he’s around. She’s learning manners and basic commands and that not all the objects in the home belong to her (but spatulas from the dishwasher can be irresistible!). Once she gets her energy out, she’s happy to cuddle or sleep in her crate.
|
The perfect home for Cookie will be one that is quiet and loving, preferably with a male dog, and a family who will continue her socialization and training…and above all, have patience with her while she adjusts to her new home. This beauty truly is one smart Cookie who will grow up to be a very special girl.

Volunteer Spotlight: Tina
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Name & Hometown: Tina, Weymouth
How long have you been a GSRNE volunteer?
Since fall 2008 about 13.5 years
What do you do for GSRNE? What does the job entail? How many hours per week/month?
I am the Adoption Coordinator, Facebook Page Coordinator and Board Member.
The adoption area is a lot of work. We have a great group of volunteers who all work together screening the hotline calls, going through and sending out adoption applications, doing reference checks, and conducting the home visits to match a GSRNE foster dog with the best family for them. Once we make the match, we schedule the visit with the family to meet the dog in the foster home. If the visit goes well and the family wants to adopt the dog, then we create the adoption folder/contact and do the adoption signing. Being on the Adoption Team is time consuming – lots of hours…some weeks it’s like a full-time job, but it’s worth it in the end to see how happy the families are when they finally get their dog and to see the dog loved and thriving in their forever home.
Facebook is easy, for the most part. I share “Happy Tails,” post photos of our dogs, and share interesting articles, etc.
Board Member duties are more responsibilities than I could have ever imagined. They say, “It takes a village,” and I am grateful that GSRNE is so fortunate to have so many committed and caring volunteers that help in so many ways. There are so many people involved, just to place one dog into its forever home..

Tina with Tessa, GSRNE #424
|
Do you have a GSRNE dog?
I have two – Cora, GSRNE #353 and Tessa, GSRNE #424
How did you get interested in GSRNE?
I’ve had German Shepherds since I was 7 years old. I loved the breed and was always looking on the website seeing all the beautiful dogs, and decided I wanted to help out and become a volunteer.
What is it about the organization that interests you?
Making a difference to all these homeless dogs, and working beside so many wonderful people who have become good friends over the last 13.5 years.
What would you say to prospective volunteers?
When I signed up to become a volunteer, I knew no one, but I decided to take a chance. I figured if it wasn’t for me, I’d quit. I started out small, going to Barnes & Noble that Christmas season of 2009 to help at a few gift-wrapping events. Then I started participating in more events, which really opened the window to meeting a lot of nice people, some of whom have become very close friends.
My suggestion to anyone thinking about volunteering is to give GSRNE a try. Your help will never go unnoticed, and you will never feel like you aren’t helping our dogs in some way. It’s such a rewarding feeling to know you are positively contributing to helping a dog find its “happily ever after.”

Donations For Our
Foster Dogs
Thank you to so many of you for helping our foster dogs by sending us several of our requested supplies on our Wish List.
Most items provided to our foster homes for the dogs' care and training are generous donations from people like you. There are many items on the list that we need, but currently, we especially need toys for our foster dogs.
Our Wish List has a link that will bring you to our continuously updated list of items that you can order through Amazon.com. We have now updated the list to show which items we need more by being listed first and/or showing the priority level.
If you would like to help, please visit our Web site and go to our Wish List tab or click on this link: Wish List
to view the items.
The shipping address is included on the Amazon Web site when you "check out". You will see a shipping address to choose called GSRNE Foster Dogs Wish List. The shipping address will be automatically added to your order once selected.
For privacy reasons, Amazon will not share your address with us unless you add it to a "Gift Card" during the Checkout Process. We never share your information with other organizations and will only use it for the purpose of acknowledging your generosity and providing you with a receipt for tax purposes.
Thank you for all you do to help our GSDs in need!

Foster Homes Needed!!
If you love the breed and want to help, consider fostering. GSRNE pays all the expenses. You provide the love and care. We receive several hundred calls for help every year from Shelters and Owners looking to place a dog with GSRNE. We cannot help them all, but we need Foster Homes to help those that we can. Some of our Foster Homes become so attached to their Foster Dog that they become the dog's Forever Home. We love every happy ending, but that also means we need a new Foster Home for the next dog in need. To learn more about fostering, please visit www.gsrne.org/foster/
When you look at the wonderful dogs available for adoption, and you read the Happy Tails in our Newsletter and online, remember that GSRNE was able to help these dogs because of our Foster Homes.
Fostering Basics
A fence is required. Dogs are at the greatest risk of escape when they are first introduced to a new location. Children living in the home need to be age 10 or older.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the foster home do?
You provide a safe and stable environment for the foster dog until he or she finds a forever home. You take care of your foster dog like you would your own dog - play, exercise, grooming and basic manners training. You also provide periodic reports to GSRNE about the dog's progress, personality, likes & dislikes so that GSRNE can find the right match for him or her.
2. How do I know if the foster dog will be a good fit for me and my family?
We work with you to determine what general type of dog will adapt to your household for a successful fostering experience for you & the rescue dog. We also provide strong support for you & help is only a phone call away.
3. How much does it cost to foster a GSD for GSRNE?
There is no cost to the foster home. GSRNE reimburses you for the foster dog's food and pays for all authorized vet care. In addition, GSRNE loans you a crate, feeding and water dishes, bedding, brushes, collars, leashes, & of course, toys!
