The Printers Building: Where Creativity and Community Are Boundless

A sense of pride for Worcester’s unique structures and historical buildings is what bonds many people in the Heart of the Commonwealth, and the Printers Building is no exception. This nearly 100-year-old Downtown Worcester mainstay—the former home of several printing companies, from where it gets its name—now hosts some of the most creatively driven local businesses, from art galleries and musical masterminds to incubator hubs and makerspaces.
“[The Printers Building] is an explosion of culture, creativity, and discovery of new things,” relays Julian Wade, president of Davis Publications, the Davis and Wade family-owned art education publishing company that set up The Printers Building Trust, which acts as sole owner of the building. Together, the two have breathed new life into the space.

“The building is very personal to me, to my family,” he points out. “I have deep, fundamental memories of coming to visit my father, my grandfather. The creaks of the floor, the smells of the elevator… Even when it wasn’t in the best shape, it was always something that the family took pride in. And as you get to meet people in the community, they talk about their own memories. They walk into the building now and they have a lot of pride for what they did here, who they worked for, their individual experiences.”
Julian says the building’s tenants—from Crocodile River Music to Technocopia—have wholeheartedly created a sense of togetherness as each has joined the inner workings of the place. The Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), for which Julian serves on the board, established its office on the fifth floor following the building’s $10,000,000 rehab, which spanned from 2014 to 2019.
“We’re grateful every day to work in such an exciting space, with its beautiful views of Downtown and proximity to everything,” says BID Executive Director Evelyn Darling. “That it’s an adaptive re-use of a historic building is an additional plus.”

Today, the folks at the Printers Building are proud to relay that the Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts will move into the space in 2023. SEACMA is a local organization that supports Southeast Asian immigrants, refugees, and long-term residents in overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers, integrating into mainstream society, and becoming self-sustainable contributors in economic, social, and civic life.
