NYMC Honors Historic Partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan During Plaque Dedication Ceremony

It was a time to reflect on the longstanding reputation of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and their partnership with NYMC—the longest affiliation between a medical school and municipal hospital in the United States—at the NYPD 23rd Precinct Plaque Dedication Ceremony at Met on June 10. Leadership from NYMC, Met and representatives from the 23rd Precinct joined to commemorate the plaque which was recently restored by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., fourth from right, chancellor and chief executive officer, and Nicholas Webb, MSIS, fourth from left, archivist and digital preservation librarian. The plaque was originally presented to Metropolitan in 1975 to commemorate the life-saving work of Met staff for three NYPD officers. Read the full article and view the photo gallery.

Kristy Tefft, M.S. ’20, SOM Class of 2024, Puts a Premium on Patient Relationships

Kristy Tefft, M.S. ’20, SOM Class of 2024, became increasingly certain of her desire to be involved in health care with each patient she helped treat. From her time volunteering at a hospital to her pursuing her M.S. in Basic Medical Sciences at NYMC, to now approaching her clinical studies as a medical student, Ms. Tefft has relished the opportunities to build relationships with the patients she meets. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety Keeps the NYMC Community Safe and in Compliance

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for a broad range of safety policies and trainings to ensure the safety of the campus community, as well as proper usage of energy and laboratory space at NYMC. EHS also serves as a hub for members of the NYMC community for information on safety regulations, how to properly dispose of laboratory waste and any other environmental health concerns on campus. Donate Life Clubs Finishes Exceptional Year With Record-Breaking Donations

The NYMC Donate Life Club finished the 2021-2022 academic year strong with their final blood drive on June 2. The final cumulative count was a record 256 donations. The donations, which all came during a blood shortage in New York, reached approximately 650 patients in area hospitals in a time of great need. Read the full article.

George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, EMTP, right, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was inducted into the Delta Alpha chapter of Delta Omega, the national public health honor society, with an honorary membership for meritorious distinction in public health. Penny Liberatos, Ph.D., associate professor of public health and president of the NYMC Delta Alpha chapter, bestowed the honor on him on May 24. 

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, seated third from right, was invited to participate in the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) National Security Seminar in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, June 5 – 9. Dr. Murthy was one of 168 business, government, academic and community leaders selected from across the country to take part in the week-long academic seminar alongside the students of the USAWC to exchange thoughts about national security topics in the capstone phase of the USAWC graduate program.

Charles Longo, assistant director of public safety, is an amateur harness racer, a form of horse racing called standardbred racing or trotters. Mr. Longo earned his first two amateur victories as a driver in Ontario, Canada, on May 30. Despite racing being a lifelong interest of Mr. Longo, he did not attend the U.S. Trotting Association’s Driving School until he was 50 years old. Following his victories, he was approved to race at the Meadowlands Racetrack, a prominent horse racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
