While US supply chains are a virtual train wreck, national railroad corporations are letting runaway greed further disrupt shipping and grind employees into the ground.
It’s time to fight back, and that’s what train engineers and conductors have been doing – and supporters have a chance to sound off this Sunday, May 15th in Fort Madison, Iowa, where a rally supporting BNSF Railroad workers is being held. The event is sponsored by the Lee County AFL-CIO Labor Chapter.
Central to the worker uprising underway throughout the country has been reckless work scheduling. National rail carriers, particularly BNSF, have actually ramped up abusive scheduling practices resulting in skyrocketing turnover and supply chain disruption. Its engineers and conductors have been rendered virtually captive, 24/7, 365 days a year, to the company as a result of its “Hi Viz” policy. It threatens their jobs for missing work if they are sick or injured, if their family members are sick or injured, if they want to take time to rest or participate in family activities, and much more.
Compounding the problems this policy causes, a federal judge has ruled that the unions representing conductors and engineers are forbidden to strike. Furthermore, he ruled that other measures BNSF could take to protest are also forbidden. This is why it is up to those of us who are not affected by this court ruling to speak out against this vicious policy. Please join us and our guest speakers to let Warren Buffett and all the other billionaires and hedge fund operators running our railroads know what you think of corporations ruining peoples lives so they can continue to make obscene profits.
