This month, we'll hear from Santiago Cullingford, our Community Educator.
Thanksgiving has passed and winter festivities are just around the corner. What advice would you offer to caregivers looking after their loved one/s during the holidays?
As a caregiver, I feel stressed and anxious during the holidays. I spend a lot of time with and caring for my family members, and I don’t have very much time for myself. To alleviate this stress, I consciously practice shifting my mindset to one of gratitude: for example, during the holidays, I’m thankful to be able to visit my family members that I normally wouldn’t see. Feeling and expressing gratitude is key to keeping a caregiver’s mental health positive and stress-free.
I also recommend that caregivers practice self-care as a way to alleviate stress. Meditation is a great stress management technique that allows me to strengthen my patience and sense of calm during the holiday season. Southern Caregiver Resource Center offers several helpful self-care resources: visit www.scrc.care and explore the iCare Portal!
