As labor negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (“ILA”) and the United States Maritime Alliance (“USMX”) remain stalled, the likelihood of a coast-wide strike increases. Currently, the ILA-USMX agreement is set to expire at the end of this month and ILA members are preparing to initiate strikes on October 1, 2024.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have had 10 successful master contracts since the USMX was established in 1997, and the ILA hasn’t experienced a work stoppage since their last strike in 1977.
Some ocean carriers are already announcing proposed surcharges that will take effect in the event of a strike. Shipments may be rerouted to other ports, which is likely to result in worsening congestion at already-congested west coast ports. We're already seeing cancellation of rail service to to East Coast ports.
