Dear SENTRY Community, 


In the season of giving thanks, it's a fitting time to reflect on our mission and the tremendous strides we've made at SENTRY. Over the past few months, we've hosted and participated in events and research opportunities to engage our network of researchers, industry partners, students, and staff in the heart of our work. I invite you to continue reading for an overview of our recent accomplishments.

ADSA27: Workshop on Advanced Development for Security Applications

On November 14-15, 2023, both in-person and virtually, ADSA27 gathered a select group of participants for a 2-day workshop to delve into the critical theme of "Implementation and Deployment of Situational Awareness Strategies for Protecting Soft Targets." Convened at Northeastern University, this event aimed to foster discussions on the development and utilization of technologies, software, and communication tools to mitigate the impact of attacks on soft targets. The annual workshop series plays a pivotal role in building connections and advancing strategies to enhance the security of crowded spaces, contributing to the broader mission of safeguarding the public from potential threats.

Symposium on School Safety at the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) Annual Meeting: To promote our work in the school security space, Professor Jun Zhang will host a Symposium on School Safety on December 13, 2023, at the SRA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. SENTRY researchers engaged with the School Security Case Study efforts will gather to share the latest research and best practices in the area. Visit the SRA event website for more details.

DASSH (Designing Actionable Solutions for a Secure Homeland) Student Design Challenge: Join us for the annual DASSH Student Design Challenge on February 23-25, 2024, hosted by SENTRY and CAOE (Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency). Compete against other university student teams in this 3-day event where you'll tackle real-world homeland security challenges and create innovative solutions to present to DHS leadership. DHS Summer Research Team Program for MSIs: The DHS Summer Research Team (SRT) Program for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) is currently accepting applications from faculty members at MSIs to participate in a ten week summer research team experience. This program aims to augment and strengthen scientific leadership at MSIs in research areas that align with the mission and objectives of DHS. Apply now through December 29, 2023.

DHS S&T Homeland Security Startup Studio: Join the Science & Technology Directorate and Homeland Security Startup Studio program partner, FedTec on December 6th, and December 19th, 2023, from 1-2 pm EST for an exclusive information session on the Homeland Security Startup Studio 2024 program. Working in alignment with SENTRY’s mission to safeguard our communities and mitigate attacks on soft targets and crowded places, Kevin’s research is focused on the prevention of school shootings. Join the DHS PEERs Program and Shape the Future of STEM 


Apply From December 1, 2023, to April 10, 2024 


Join the DHS Peers Program and be a catalyst for change in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. SENTRY, with funding from the DHS S&T Office of University Programs, is partnering with the NSF INCLUDES Engineering PLUS Alliance and its stEm PEER Academy to engage a cadre of 2024 DHS PEERs. These PEERs, working closely with the DHS Centers of Excellence and their affiliated partners, will implement evidence-based practices to increase the number of BIPOC and women students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering and other STEM disciplines.  


If you're passionate about this cause, don't miss the chance to apply for the 2024-2025 stEm PEER Academy. Admitted applicants to this two-year program will be informed no later than April 17, 2024. Each PEER will receive a $1,000 stipend for participating and $10,000 to fund their Implementation Project.
