Years in the Industry: 19 years

Previous Experience: Before joining this family business (where I've done almost everything except run the payroll or press), I worked in corporate communications. Still working with the media, just from the other side.

What I like most about my job: It's always interesting. And, I love being at the heart of the community and our positive contribution.

What's the greatest opportunity for newspapers in the future? That's the million dollar question! Quality information is increasingly valuable. Balance and varied perspectives are increasing valuable. There have never been more options for what newspapers can do and bring. I don't know what's greatest, but I'm inspired by the creativity and the chance to try new ideas out.

Years in the Industry: 10 years

Previous Experience: I started as a senior district sales manager then moved up to customer service, sales and marketing manager. Then, in 2017, was promoted again to regional director of audience development with a CNHI newspaper. Finally arriving at my current position in Eastern North Carolina with APG as regional director of audience development.

What I like most about my job: The thing I like most about my job is working with a talented team and seeing our hard work pay off every day when the newspaper comes out.

What's the greatest opportunity for newspapers in the future? I think the greatest opportunity for newspapers in the future is taking advantage of new technology to engage new readers while maintaining our editorial integrity. People are hungry for real news that impacts them every day. Our print products can't be matched and we are reaching more readers now than ever before when you add in the digital side of things. I think newspapers have a long, bright future ahead.

America's Newspapers will recognize editorial page excellence at its annual meeting this fall, with the presentation of the 2022 Carmage Walls Commentary Prize.

The prize is named for the late Benjamin Carmage Walls whose newspaper career spanned seven decades. Walls primarily owned community newspapers and advocated strong, courageous and positive editorial page leadership. His friends and associates funded the cost of the awards for the first 10 years. Southern Newspapers, Inc. — led by Lissa Walls Cribb, his daughter, CEO of Southern Newspapers — has been underwriting the cost of the awards since then.
