From last October to this October, it has been a year.  As we welcomed in Rosh Hashanah 5784, no one knew what the future would hold for the Jewish people. Yet, we were hardly into that year when on Simchat Torah - October 7th - war began when Hamas murdered 1,200 people, took more than 200 hostage, and injured many more. War in the Middle East and rising antisemitism in America and around the world has been painful and disorienting.

This year of 2024 has been quite a year for the Jewish people, the American people, and the American Jew. Personally, it’s not been an easy year as parents of Jewish children in East Cobb and we’ve had some difficult conversations with our own kids.

News From the Mitzner Family Religious School


September has been a busy month for the Religious School. We have had a great start to the year as our students learn Hebrew, about the High Holy Days, and enjoy time together.


Please plan to join us for the following Family Shabbat dates that will feature our great students as part of the services!

  • Fri, October 25 - K-2nd grade, Consecration, Simchat Torah
  • Fri, November 8 - Chai 5, Veterans Shabbat
  • Fri, January 10 - 6th Grade reflections on MLK Jr.
  • Fri, February 7 - 5th grade 
  • Fri, March 14 - 4th grade
  • Sat, March 29 - 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Morning Shabbat
  • Fri, May 2 - 3rd grade

We will be celebrating Sukkot on October 20 with Sundaes in the Sukkah featuring Whit's Custard. Please join us and invite your friends and neighbors!


Finally, we welcomed Noga, our Shinshinit, from Israel. She led a great art activity for us and will join us about 12 - 13 times this school year during chuggim.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:

Youth Engagement

KLUB345

Come join the fun with Klub 345 this year. On October 27 we will be having a Lounge Day where we hang out and socialize with our friends. Pizza lunch will be provided.



On November 17, we will be having a Mitzvah and Ice Cream Sundae day.

This year, we will be using looms to make hats and scarves for The Drake House and the Zaban Couples shelter. Adult volunteers will be available to help, but we can always use extra hands. Lunch and an ice cream sundae bar will be provided.

RAFTY

This October, RAFTY is hosting the Teen High Holy Days Services. Join us on October 3rd and 12th for services in the Social Hall. Looking ahead, RAFTY is having a collaborative event with JYG on November 3rd! This collaboration promises a fun-filled day with engaging activities that bring both groups together and get JYG members excited for RAFTY in the future. 

Next semester is packed with even more fun and exciting events, so stay tuned for details!

COLLEGE OUTREACH

There is still time to sign your students up for the College Outreach program, where we send packages around the holidays to our college students living away at school. If you have a student who will be away at college this year, send us their campus address and email for inclusion in our program. The committee will be reaching out to these students throughout the year with packages and cards.
