May is a big month for Narika. AAPI Heritage Month celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans to the history and culture of the United States. As an agency serving the South Asian community, we honor the AAPI legacy and stay rooted in our community, calling for an end to AAPI hate and violence.
May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, a key month of awareness and action for everyone in the IPV movement—advocates, survivors and volunteers. Trauma impacts our body and mind in ways that are far reaching and many times under recognized. There is no timeline to healing and Narika stays committed to providing trauma informed, compassionate support for survivors of intimate partner violence.
Finally, this month now portends the possibility of significant impact to women and other vulnerable communities, with the latest information leaked about the Supreme Court's impending decision on Roe v Wade. Any threat to abortion access not only affects the rights, health, safety and equity of women but also carries the possibility of harm for many other vulnerable communities, including the LGBTQ+ community, gender non conforming community, people of color and low income communities. Let us remember the leaked report does not yet indicate the Court’s final decision however, we must acknowledge that abortion restrictions would be gender-based violence.
Narika stands in solidarity with all working towards protecting our basic human right to reproductive justice.
