Message from the Arlington Airport Director

We, at Arlington Municipal Airport, are so fortunate to have a community that is steeped in aviation history and that supports our airport not only with hundreds of aviation jobs, but with support for events at the airport. To keep up this support, very little is asked of us. That’s why it’s so important that we remember to “fly friendly.”

While we don’t get a lot of noise complaints, there has been an uptick recently. This is due to pilots flying non-standard patterns. Whether it’s flying over Gleneagle to the east, or over the neighborhoods to the west, we need to be aware of the impacts this creates. I have observed pilots departing Runway 34 turning to the west before even reaching the end of the runway. I have also observed pilots flying over the neighborhoods to the east. I’ve seen this on both 34 and 16, as well as Runway 11/29. Please review the proper pattern entry, and exit for these runways and review the guidance from the FAA.

In conclusion, please be considerate to other pilots and to the neighborhoods that surround us. Flying Friendly will ensure continued support from our valued neighbors. Until the next time…

Blue Skies,

Dave Ryan

AWO Operations Staff Are Commercial Drone Pilots

Taylor Mozingo, Lorene Robinson, and Silvana Vasquez recently received Commercial Drone Licenses after completing study and testing through the FAA.

The test is a rigorous knowledge based airspace and operational assessment that is similar to pilot testing for powered passenger aircraft, and allows the entire Operations Specialist staff at Arlington to operate drone aircraft at both airport and non-airport environments.

The AWO drone aircraft program is an important aspect to airport inspections, surveillance, and marketing. Drones are a new useful tool that now allow for previously remote areas of the airport to be inspected and managed on a regular basis.

Drones can assist in search and rescue efforts in the event of an incident or downed aircraft that are sometimes hard to locate. Drones allow for airspace and airport imagery from altitudes unavailable unless utilized via manned aircraft, potentially saving thousands of dollars in contracting and aircraft rental. In addition, drones help in wildlife management and trespassing identification.

AWO is the first general aviation airport to have the entire Operations Specialist staff completely licensed for Commercial Drone Operations. Congratulations, team!

JROTC Field Trip

On January 24, we hosted a field trip for the Arlington High School JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps), that consisted of 32 students. Several airport businesses were kind of enough to offer the students an inside look of their day to day operations. Arlington Flight Services, Global Machine Works, Vashon Aircraft, Glasair, and Mission Aviation Training Academy (MATA) participated. Airport staff really enjoy these opportunities to enhance the community outreach. Last year, we held several such field trips which included a visit from local assisted living residents. Next month, we will be hosting a preschool at the airport!

Northwest Aviation Conference and Tradeshow

After being away a few years, Airport Staff happily returned as an exhibitor to the Northwest Aviation Conference and Tradeshow. Spectators and exhibitors filled the hall at the Washington State Fairgrounds on February 25 and 26. Staff had a great time answering questions and visiting with tenants, pilots, and aviation enthusiasts. During the event, attendees could not only visit the exhibitors, but also attend seminars that were offered throughout the weekend. A great time was had by all that attended!

Derelict area at KAWO.... Where airplanes go to die.... do you know the owners? YES, we've looked up the N numbers and reached out, but if you know them, let them know we may be holding an auction in the near future.....
