Last Week

FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN

The November Vestry meeting had a purposefully full agenda, and we left the meeting feeling positive about so many things happening within our Church. We held a happy discussion and subsequent vote of support for Mary Painter’s nomination for postulancy toward Holy Orders. We are pleased and proud to support her as she grows in the body of Christ towards the priesthood. This is the first of many steps for her and we ask that we all pray for her in this journey.

We were also reminded of another journey of discernment towards the priesthood. This one is coming to its conclusion, and we all have the opportunity to walk the final steps with Reverend Kimberly on Saturday December 16th when she is ordained into the priesthood by Bishop Logue. Come join the celebration.

After celebrating the growth in our pastoral life, a review of a very early stewardship report appears to show growth in pledging families and in income. We are hopeful that the message for support of Saint Paul’s is finding connections with both older and younger families. If you have not yet completed a pledge card, and there’s approximately 38 pledgers who pledged last year who have not pledged yet, please consider joining 117 of us as we continue and expand the ministries of Saint Paul’s. Ministries and events for families with children, in particular, need support by families with children.

Lastly, we continue to grapple with an aspect of the Strategic Plan that remains a conundrum. There are so many activities and ministries that allow us to live out our Christian lives to both our fellow parishioners and to our neighbors (refer to the Program Guide), but we over-rely on a regular, and candidly a small number, of lay volunteers, and burn out of those talents is a real worry. We are looking for suggestions for ways to reach out for additional and new lay leadership and your voice is important.

A HORNSBY THANK YOU & INVITATION TO ANGEL TREE

A NOTE FROM W. S. HORNSBY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

We thank you for all you are doing for our school community!

--Stephanie S. Hemingway, Ed.S.

Assistant Principal, W.S. Hornsby Elementary School

Thanks to the generosity of the members of Saint Paul’s Church, we have delivered nearly 500 books to classrooms, the media center, and book vending machines at Hornsby Elementary. We have also provided an SUV full of personal care items that include washcloths and towels, personal hygiene products, and detergent to launder kids’ clothes, and more.

Starting November 26, we are launching another drive for Hornsby, a clothing drive for students in Pre-kindergarten through Grade 5 because the need is so great. Sometimes a change of clothes is needed because of an accident, but other times it is because there is no change of clothes at home. After the next three services at eleven o’clock, we will have an Angel Tree located on the west portico. If each of us would select a note from the tree that provides size information for an unnamed boy or girl from one of Hornsby’s homerooms, and we bought a pair of pants and shirt for that child, Saint Paul’s Church could help address the ongoing need for clean clothes.

Saint Paul’s congregation has graciously supported Hornsby Elementary and provided abundantly each time it has been asked; and not surprisingly, every note and every phone call we receive from a Hornsby administrator, always ends by thanking each one of you for your generosity. Imagine, together, we are building Christ’s beloved community right here in Augusta.

Grateful: The Subversive Practice of Giving Thanks led by Barbara Coleman.

“Every day there are reasons not to be grateful. Terrible, distressing, painful, and awful things happen all the time. Yet gratitude is a defiance, of sorts, the defiance of kindness in the face of anger, of connection in the face of division, and of hope in the face of fear. Gratefulness does not acquiesce to evil–it resists evil.”

Books are available in the Narthex on Sunday and in the parish office during the week. $20 donation. Sign up on the website, so that we can forward class schedules and updates.
