CALTAP NEWS & EVENTS: June 6, 2023

Discretionary Grants Dashboard

The USDOT has setup an online Dashboard to simplify access and awareness of discretionary grants that can help communities meet their transportation infrastructure needs.

This dashboard also identifies grants that have rural or tribal set-asides and match funding wavers, and even includes grant notices from outside the DOT that may be of interest to rural communities.

This new tool is spotlighted in a recent webinar that explains how to search for and find grant opportunities depending upon the project, organization, and match requirements. You can view the recording here (pw: w0=B$P9$).

The DOT Discretionary Grants Dashboard is updated weekly and a grant applicant toolkit is also in the works to help rural communities harness it.

California's Local Technical Assistance Program

Not sure who CALTAP is or what we do? Take a moment to hear from Director Tom O'Brien as he explains the mission, network, training, and resources we work to bring to your agency in this brief 5 minute video.

Basically, our goal is to support California's local, rural, and tribal transportation agencies by providing professional training, technical assistance, knowledge transfer, and worksite innovations to help you plan, manage, maintain, and keep safe your community's roadway infrastructure.

Stay up-to-date on the latest training opportunities and webinar presentations via our website and social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube).

Build America, Buy America Webinar

If you missed last week's informative presentation, the recorded session can now be viewed on our CALTAP YouTube channel.

FHWA and Caltrans presenters covered a number of critical updates to the original Buy America program, including bringing clarity to the issue of authorized materials and exclusion waivers.

A formal Q&A document is being prepared for release and powerpoints are available upon request.

Winners Announced!

2023 Build a Better Mousetrap

After carefully evaluating the impact, originality, and overall benefit of each applicant submission, our CALTAP judges are proud to announce the winners of this year's Build a Better Mousetrap Competition:

Congratulations to the City of Walnut Creek!

Walnut Creek's Safe Sightings of Signs & Signals (SSOSS) automates the otherwise onerous effort of checking the City's traffic signal sight distance for safe clearance and visibility with an open-source software solution that can readily be used by other agencies to achieve similar results.

Congratulations to the Port of Long Beach!

We join POLB (along with partners CITT and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School) in celebrating the successful launch and deployment of their Academy of Global Logistics. This four-year pathway focused on careers in global logistics and supply chain management offers high schoolers real-world and experiential learning opportunities relevant to daily life. 91% of students who enter AGL in 9th grade stay with the pathway all four years.

Special mention also goes out to POLB for its Mark Bixby Memorial Bicycle-Pedestrian Path & Ocean Boulevard Connector, which provides the public with much needed access across the new Gateway Bridge.

Each of these extraordinary applications will advance on to FHWA's national competition as representatives of California's innovative spirit.
