Welcome to the Bridge - The Official GIV Newsletter

For more than 50 years our family has tended our vineyards and grown our own grapes, for our wines, along the lush banks of the Sacramento River. We are striving to perfect the art and science of grape growing, and we’re proud to share the rewards of our labor by creating wines that showcase distinctive grapes perfectly. Bridging all aspects of our Winery from the Vineyard, to the Cellar, Winery Grounds, Tasting Room and beyond.

Here Comes The Crush!

------- Written by GIV Winemaker, Ed Siekel

Harvest is here, and we’re gearing up for the crush! For us in the cellar, this means we have been busy walking the vineyards and setting up the crush pad. The press, destemmer, and all the other equipment need to be removed from storage, set up, and fully cleaned to be ready to process grapes.

This year, Sauvignon Blanc will be the first varietal to be harvested. Even last week before they were fully ripe, the grapes were tasting great and should produce an excellent wine. We're also excited about some new (and old) wines that we will potentially be producing this vintage.

Joe recently planted a new block of Viognier that is now in its 4th year; they are still very young vines, but we are really hoping we can add it to our 2024 releases. We are also planning on producing a new version of Premier, our take on a Bordeaux-style red blend. With Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and now Malbec available to us, this vintage should be just as outstanding as the original!

Gewurztraminer: A Day in the Life

------- Written by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

It began August 20th in the early morning. A small group of Salman Farms Inc employees trekked out to GIV Block #3 where we grow our wonderful grapes used for the Gewurztraminer.

This hand-picked, well intentioned group was armed only with hand clippers and buckets, but were ready for anything. Their machinery, a John Deere and Kubota tractor with bin trailers, would begin to haul bins back towards the winery.

These bins unfortunately would not be processed here, but rather loaded on a small bobtail truck of another winery. In the final days of August that group of workers went back to doing some other tasks out in the field and Salman Farms went to harvesting on a bit of a larger scale including that pretty brownish pink Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

Grapes soon to come to winery, check in with Ed and David.

Cheers,

Joe
