The theme of this year's Summer Music Camp is “Noah and His Animals.” On Tuesday of that week, the kids will enjoy an interactive concert/stuffed animal party with the Gutekunst Flute Ensemble. Each day the kids will learn music theory and musical skills while playing games, contests, and winning fun prizes. On Friday of that week, the kids will perform a mini-musical, “Noah and His Animals,” a musical re-telling of the classic Bible story. |

The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.
Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she's going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.
Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman's belief that books can carry us anywhere—even back home.

Adult Bible Study - starts May 8th |
“Sharing the Gospel Using John 3:16 –
The Gospel in Miniature”
Join Pastor Ken Nelson for this informative three-week study on how to enter conversations about our faith. Resources will be available to all participants, and a sign-up sheet will be posted near the fellowship hall doors so we can get a sense of how many sets of materials to prepare.
Sessions will be held in the media room on May 8th, 15th and 22nd beginning at 10:30 PM. The aim of this study will be to use John 3:16 (which many people have memorized or recognize, even if they are not a Christian) as a template for having a faith conversation with someone. It will also enable them to present the “gospel within the gospel”, as John 3:16 has been called, in a welcoming and convincing way.

Our registration will be limited to 65 participants (15 preschoolers and 50 elementary-aged students).
Preschool participants (3 and 4 year-olds) must be three years old before the start of VBS and must be potty-trained.

Pastor Ken's Weekly Bible Study

Pastor Ken's weekly Bible study is held each Wednesday from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. He will lead discussion around the Scripture lessons that will be read in worship the following weekend.
Please bring your Bibles - other materials will be provided. Copies of the text study sheets will be available on the table in the Narthex if you can't attend the Bible study, but would like to refer to it for the weekend worship.

The Church Life Committee is sponsoring the third annual "Poker Walk for Water" to benefit our May Mission of the Month, Compassion International, on Saturday, May 21 at 9 a.m.
This year we will begin and end the 1.4 mile walk at Calvary To add a little fun to the walk, you'll receive playing cards along the way to help you create a winning poker hand. There are prizes in both the adult and child categories.
Registration is $10/person or $25/family. All money collected will be donated to Compassion International for its Clean Water programs. A sign up sheet is on the glass doors in the Narthex.

Compassion International is a child-advocacy ministry that pairs compassionate people with those who are suffering from poverty. The ministry releases children from spiritual, economic, social, and physical poverty. The goal is for each child to become a responsible and fulfilled adult.
More than 70 years ago, Rev. Everett Swanson flew to South Korea to minister to American troops fighting in the Korean War. During his time there, he grew increasingly troubled by the sight of hundreds of war orphans living on the streets, abandoned by society.
One morning he saw city workers scoop up what looked like piles of rags and toss them into the back of a truck. He walked up to the truck for a closer look — and was horrified to see that the "piles" were not rags, but the frozen bodies of orphans who had died overnight in the streets.
Appalled, Rev. Swanson began including this experience into his revival meetings, and Christians responded by donating funds to purchase rice and fuel for the orphans. Within 10 years, 108 orphanages and homes in South Korea were receiving support.
The etymology of the word compassion stems from the Latin com meaning "with, together" and the Latin pati "to suffer." Compassion literally means to suffer with. Compassion, suffering with another person, combines sympathy with an active response or a desire to help. Because we have compassion, we want to act and lessen someone else's suffering. This desire to act is what differentiates compassion from empathy, understanding or sharing the feelings of others.
We take a long-term approach to child development by investing in and for the life of each child.
Through our holistic child development model, we blend physical, social, economic and spiritual care together to help children in poverty fully mature in every facet of life and transcend what is often a generational legacy of poverty. We deliver whole-life care, by way of our frontline church partners, that is personal, individualized, relational, and tailored to the child's age, gender, health, culture and family situation.
We will have a special guest with us on May 7-8. You'll be able to meet an alumni of the Compassion Program, who will share his journey from being sponsored to his life today.
To support this important Mission for the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation for Mission of the Month in your online giving.

Hospitality Treats NEEDED!
We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.
If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or simply add a “P” behind your name, pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you.

Flowers are $35 and you may take them home following the 9 a.m. worship on Sunday morning. If you'd prefer, you can leave the flowers at church to be enjoyed by the office staff.

Stephen Ministry is here to help. Free, just like God's love.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour.

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.
Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.
