Peter Paul News - May 2023

Meet Our Board of Directors Vice Chair, Tyrone Payton!

Serving as a board member of the Carmax Foundation, Tyrone Payton was introduced to Peter Paul in 2018, when he, and 200 CarMax associates, constructed Peter Paul’s KaBOOM! playground in just 6 hours!  What once was an empty lot, now stands a beautiful playground that offers our students and community members a safe place to play with their friends and neighbors. Tyrone now serves as Peter Paul's Board of Directors Vice Chair.

“Once I rolled off the board at CarMax, I began looking for a local non-profit board to join and support. I really liked the mission and passion of all the people I met at Peter Paul. I signed up for a few activities at Peter Paul including the Lunch and Learn tour. The tour was very insightful, and Damon Jiggetts was very energized about the challenges and needs in the East end.”

Since 2019, Tyrone has been a member of Peter Paul’s Board of Directors and currently serves as Vice Chair. His journey to Peter Paul, like so many others, began through a volunteer experience and visit to our Coleman Center.

We invite you to join Tyrone and us at Peter Paul! Explore ways you can give of your time through our list of volunteer opportunities. Join us for a Lunch and Learn Program and see our programs in action while hearing from Peter Paul’s leadership. Make a gift to ensure Peter Paul continues fulfilling its mission in the East End of Richmond.

In the News: Forever Learning

We want to thank Richmond Magazine for featuring Peter Paul's Older Adult program and Program Coordinator, Barbara Brown, in their Sunday Story on May 7.

Article excerpt:

The theme for this year’s Older Americans Month, celebrated each May, is “Aging Unbound.” At 80, Brown exemplifies the theme. She coordinates the Older Adult Program at the Peter Paul center in Richmond’s East End, planning all the Tuesday and Thursday activities. But that’s just a job description. Her passion is helping low-income seniors explore “diverse experiences without being boxed in by expectations and stereotypes,” Brown says. “There are no limits on what we can do as we are aging. The sky’s the limit.”

After School Academy

Spring In2 Our S.OL. Carnival

We held a successful Spring In2 Our S.OL. Carnival on April 29. Our volunteers worked alongside our education team to get creative and prepare students for their SOL testing. There was dancing, musical chairs, art, crafts, and food! Who knew learning could be this exciting?

Thank you to the team at KPMG for volunteering with us and making serving our youth.

As the school year comes to a close, Peter Paul is putting things in motion for our Summer Promise Academy to keep our youth engaged and on point this summer.
