Safety in Residence & in the Kingston Community
At Queen's, we take pride in fostering a safe and inclusive environment where every student feels respected and valued. Our residence community is not just a place to sleep; it's an opportunity to build meaningful connections and friendships that will last a lifetime. We believe in celebrating our differences and looking out for each other's safety and dignity, both on campus and in the wider Kingston community.
Please be aware that the City of Kingston's University District Safety Initiative is still in effect, and local bylaws have fines of up to $2000.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
-
Respect Your Neighbours: Be mindful of the noise level in your residence and the surrounding area. Remember that not everyone has the same schedule, and respecting your neighbours' need for rest is crucial.
-
Party Responsibly: If you choose to host or attend gatherings or parties, be responsible. Keep the noise down, ensure guests are respectful, and follow all applicable rules and regulations.
-
Alcohol and Substance Use: Make responsible choices when it comes to alcohol and substance use. Know your limits, and never drink and drive. Support your friends in making safe choices as well.
-
Safety First: Always prioritize your personal safety and the safety of those around you. If you ever feel unsafe or need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to campus security or residence staff. (Download the SeQure app to connect easily with emergency services on campus)
Let's work together to make our residence and the Kingston community a safe and welcoming place for everyone. By respecting one another, celebrating our differences, and abiding by local bylaws, we can ensure that your time at Queen's University is not only academically fulfilling but safe and memorable as well.

Closures of Breakwater Park and Gord Downie Pier
Gord Edgar Downie Pier and Breakwater Park beach will be closed to the public nightly, from 8 pm to 6:30 am, from the evening of Aug. 30 to the morning of Sept. 9.
The decision to close the park follows the declaration of multiple Nuisance Parties in the University District, including one at the Pier on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 3. Large unsanctioned gatherings in this area pose major safety risks, especially at night, necessitating the closure of the park and pier.
City Bylaw Enforcement and Kingston Police will monitor and patrol the park and surrounding areas during this time. Active video surveillance is in place.

Download the SeQure App
The Queen’s University SeQure App is your one-stop access to all the university’s safety and security information. SeQure features campus and local Emergency Response contacts, Crisis Alerts, Walk home information, Blue Light locations, Support services, and much more.
The SeQure app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and the Google Play store.
Ensure you have push notifications enabled in the app. This can be done through the About/Preferences menu in the app by selecting Enable Notifications in the Push Notifications Menu.
If you already have the SeQure app downloaded on your phone, make sure you have the most recent version installed. The SeQure app was developed by students for students.

Sustainable Initiatives in Dining on Campus
Welcome to the GOOD TO GO Reusable Container Initiative! As a student living in residence, you're automatically part of our effort to reduce waste on campus. If you didn't find a green carabiner in your welcome package, please contact your Don to get yours. You'll need it to participate in our sustainable dining program.
Also, remember to carry your reusable mug as you head to classes. Using it at participating retail food locations on campus not only helps minimize single-use cups but also gets you a $0.35 discount on hot beverages and fountain drinks. It’s a simple way to be sustainable and save a little extra!

Tips and tricks to keep you eating well and on schedule
Dining Halls
- If you're in a hurry, grab the daily warm Express To-Go Meal from the cashier at any dining hall on campus. Let the cashier know which meal from the dining hall you would like, and they will deduct one dining hall meal from your weekly allotment. You can see all available options before arriving by visiting our Today’s Menu page.
-
Before going to the dining halls, view the Today’s Menu page to plan your visit.
Retail
- Use one of your TAMs in a retail location. “Trade-in” a dining hall meal swipe for a TAM swipe to build your own combo meal at participating retail locations.
