Artificial Intelligence (AI) is in the news every day.  Governments are wrestling with how to control it.

Why not join Sunrise Senior College as we explore the “Generative World of AI” in this initial session that will introduce us to this new paradigm in our daily lives?

Wikipedia defines Generative AI as:

“Generative artificial intelligence is artificial intelligence capable of generating text, images, or other media using generative models. Generative AI models learn the patterns and structure of their input training data and then generate new data that has similar characteristics.”

Okay - so what does this really mean to you? For years, we have seen science fiction writers use AI in their stories, and now it is here and impacting our daily lives. Can students really use it to do their homework? Does it have the potential to revolutionize medical treatments and research? Will it clean my house and make my meals for me? Just what can it do for us? Is it dangerous? Can it really write its own code - “self-propagation?” Explore this subject with Maria Villanueva, an experienced AI designer at the Center for Innovation (UMO), as she discusses the vast array of applications that exist in AI - from voice assistants to self-driving cars - and how they are becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives as well as the impact AI will have on us in the coming years.

Instructor: Maria Villanueva is currently an instructional designer at the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at the University of Maine at Orono. She helps faculty development of courses and creates content using various technologies. She has taught courses in New Media and Professional Practices for Studio Artists and Studio Art Foundations as well as ESL for adults through AmeriCorps.

Class Information: This is a hybrid class - held in-person and via Zoom.

This class is available to all current Maine Senior College (MSCN) Members.

Zoom Class - $8

Nov 30th, 2023

Thu from 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Learn to laugh at nothing at all and gain all the benefits that laughter has to offer. Previous experience is not necessary as the yoga portion includes deep and slow breaths along with some stretches – no yoga poses.

Playful laughter fuels positive energy, creativity, and connection. It can boost immune functions, increase pain tolerance, and release 'feel good hormones' that can change our mood to promote social bonding and positive emotions.

Laughter Yoga is a practice anyone can do at any time. In this Zoom class, exercises can all be done while seated. Please come with the ability to "think outside the box"

Denise Macaronas has been a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader since 2011. She has led Laughter Yoga sessions in Falmouth, Portland, and Peaks Island for a variety of ages, from school-age children to those in the 55+ age group. She currently leads a monthly Laughter Yoga session for those with Parkinson's Disease and their care partners.

Marcia Jackson has been a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader since 2010. She has led Laughter Yoga sessions in Brunswick and Lewiston. She attends many Zoom Laughter Yoga sessions in the United States and Canada and has also been to Zoom sessions in South America, Uruguay, India, and Australia. She currently co-leads a monthly Laughter Yoga session for those with Parkinson's Disease and their care partners.

How to Write Your Own Legacy Letter with Jerry Nulton

Jan 19, 2024, at 10 am, runs for 6 weeks - $27

What is a Legacy Letter?

A Legacy Letter is a message to family or friends. There’s no formula. It can be any of the following:

  • An expression of gratitude, a compliment or encouragement
  • A wish for their future
  • One or more life lesson(s) you’d like to share
  • A request for forgiveness or an attempt to make amends
  • A tradition you’d like to pass along
  • An important memory that means a great deal to you
  • To offer comfort and perspective

Instructor Profile: Jerry Nulton

I’ve lived a charmed life. I was taught by my mother to value an education and was taught by my father that hard work was the best path to success. I earned a double major from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania; the first is a degree in Philosophy, which I loved, and the second is a degree in Computer Science, which I used to earn a living. I’ve worked in sales, marketing, and training for most of the past 30 years. I have trained Partners in the accounting firm of Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) in sales in the UK, Ireland, and the US for the past 20 years and am currently helping them negotiate their agreements with their clients. I’m happily married to my lovely wife of 33 years; I’ve been a resident of Maine for the past 22 and I’m an avid sailor with a J-28 sailboat in Falmouth.

So, how did I get into legacy letters? Though we don’t have children, my wife and I have been saving money for our grand-niece and grand-nephews. But I realized that giving them money without wisdom is like giving a loaded gun to a toddler. So I looked for a way to put the money into a framework that would help them understand me better and hopefully give them a path to a better life. That’s how I found legacy letters. I can’t possibly hope to match the life experience that any potential participants would have, so I’m hopeful that I can learn from you while I share a tool you can use to influence the lives of your family and friends.

Enough

 by Cassidy Hutchinson

Published by Simon & Schuster 2023

Reviewed by Pat Davidson Reef

Cassidy Hutchinson’s book, “Enough” is emotionally moving. She describes her colorful and stress-filled experiences in the White House during the controversial administration of former President Donald Trump. She wants to set the record straight from an insider whose desk was steps away from the Oval Office during the January 6, 2021, crisis in the White House, a day when chaos permeated the entire building.

From an idealistic young girl thrilled to have a job in the White House, she grew to be an assistant to Mark Meadows, Chief of Staff, making appointments for him as well as typing the various communications he wanted sent. Quick, tactful, and an expert on a computer, she was a great asset to all the staff.

Her book goes back to her early childhood. She had a difficult life and moved from place to place with her mother and brother, Jack, after her parents divorce. Her father was an arrogant, unkind man who took her on hunting trips as a child, where he would kill animals cruelly, and she would cry, yet she grew up strong and independent.

She got into a small college on scholarships and worked free of charge as a summer intern for two offices in Washington. She worked in the offices of Congressman Scalise and Senator Cruz. After college, she applied to work in the White House. She is Republican and remains one. She respected Trump but did not want to be dominated by him, although she tried hard to please him and his staff. She loved working in the White House because of her love of American History, which she had studied in college. She felt it was an honor and privilege to work in the White House.

During the tense first week of January 2021 that culminated in the events of January 6, she experienced the heightening tensions generated in the political climate created by Trump. He had rejected the fact that he had lost the election and was making plans to protest the authenticity of the election at the Capitol building. Cassidy mentioned to Mark that plans for the event at the capitol building sounded dangerous. She suggests that Mark explains this to Trump; however, Mark remains silent, and he remains in his office staring at his cell phone until it is too late and the capitol building is under siege. There was no responsible leadership in the White House.

At another time, Mark told Cassidy that she would not be going to Florida with the insider group to help with the transition because Trump thought Cassidy had leaked information to the press. The leak concerned a “Crossfire Hurricane” binder with private information in it on how Russia impacted the election of 2016, which helped Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. Cassidy did not leak that information to anyone. She was very hurt, but Mark said he would find her another job in Washington when the group left for Florida. Later, a reporter dropped off the Crossfire Hurricane binder to her office, saying he was just returning it to Mark Meadows! Cassidy then knew who had leaked the information to the right-wing press.

However, Cassidy was more afraid of getting a subpoena concerning the January 6 investigation and did not know what to do. Mark supplied a lawyer who told her she would not perjure herself if she could not recall things or remember things. After being served the subpoena, Cassidy had an interview with Liz Cheney. As a casual comment, Cassidy said she was nervous about being interviewed by the Jan. 6 investigating committee. She did not have any money for a lawyer, and the Trump organization was paying for the one she had. Liz Cheney gave her the name of a law office to call if she decided to have another legal opinion. That lawyer said they would represent her pro bono. Having her own independent lawyer gave her more freedom to tell the whole truth. She realized the people she had been working for were using her and providing her with inadequate legal protection. What they were protecting was the Trump machine.

The euphoria of entering the White House every day with an I.D. card, as well as the need for a job, kept her there. She also felt she was experiencing part of history, even in a job that required a back seat.

The book shows “The good old boys stuck together” to protect their interests and themselves, yet Cassidy told the simple truth and ran circles around their efforts to keep her quiet and hidden. It reflects the spirit of a young woman who rises above the chaos and corruption among experienced politicians and dares to stand alone in revealing what really happened behind the scenes in the White House during the crisis of January 6, 2021. She thanks Mark Salter, a friend who helped her pull together her ideas and was once a speech writer for John McCain. The book shows a young woman’s high ideals and love of America.
