The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.

Plant of the Week!

Ceanothus 'Victoria'

ceanothus 2.jpeg

Originally found in Victoria, Canada- hence the name. This is one of the most popular shrubs in western Oregon. And rightfully so. This wild lilac sports excellent cold hardiness, prolific flowers, and glossy handsome evergreen foliage year round. A strong growing shrub that can literally explode in growth in rich soil but is much more restrained in poorer mediums. It performs the best in full sun with regular watering for the first couple of years to establish, but once established this is a very drought tolerant plant. Sky blue flowers profusely cover this dense shrub in a haze of color for 3-4 weeks in early summer. Later blooming than most other Ceanothus and cold hardy to about 5ºF. Loved by pollinators of all kinds and is virtually rolling in bees during its fabulous bloom. It is also somewhat deer resistant. Very fast growing to an average of 8' x 8′. However, it does well to pruning and can be kept at half the mature height. Excellent with all west coast natives.
