This is a tender time for Pathways To Peace (PTP) as we mourn the death of Diane Feinstein, who was an enduring advocate for peace and justice, and a prominent figure in our PTP history.
As the Mayor of San Francisco (November 27, 1978, to January 8, 1988) Mayor Feinstein was an important influence in supporting the 1984 United Nations International Day of Peace in San Francisco which was led and organized by Pathways To Peace.
We honor and thank Senator Diane Feinstein for her vision, heart, and care for humanity.
In 1981 Pathways To Peace, through Co-founder Avon Mattison, helped establish the United Nations International Day of Peace (Peace Day). The United Nations Resolution 36/37, was passed by unanimous vote as the General Assembly declared; "...this as a day devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” Peace Day is celebrated annually on September 21st by over a billion people world-wide.
With Mayor Feinstein's support during the organizing and celebration of Peace Day, on September 18, 1984, many businesses stopped their cash registers at 12: 00 p.m. noon, churches rang their bells, KRON (NBC) TV stopped broadcasting for one minute and a major event, organized by Pathways To Peace, took place in front of San Francisco City Hall.
With Senator Feinstein’s passing, we are called back into our own history, and remembering how one person’s dedication to peace can move a nation and bring meaning to so many. And we are grateful.
