Word from the Pastor:
Letter to Graduates

But as for you, [child] of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.”
1 Timothy 6:1116

Dear graduates, particularly our high school graduates, class of 2022:

I write this letter a few days before most of you graduate. Remembering my own graduation, I am quite sure that you are very excited. You can’t wait to begin the next phase of your life, with all the freedom that entails, and you are also a little anxious. You probably feel that you need to shoulder your own destiny as you move forward. That’s a lot of responsibility, and if you are honest with yourself, you might feel like you aren’t quite ready for whatever comes next.

I am going to let you in on a little secret: all of us, even your parents and mentors that you love and respect, we are all just doing the best we can with what we’ve got. Life isn’t safe, nothing is assured, and we are all just dancing in the grand waltz of life to the best of our ability. Sure, we have expectations of you, and it is fair to say that we probably unfairly load you with the burden of who we hope you will become. In the end, I hope that you will come to see us and those expectations compassionately, as an expression of the deep love that we have for you.

So what then is to be done? Are there no pointers or tips we might give you as you make your way in the world? Are all of us just really making it up as we go along?

Not quite. Here I share with you the wise and faithful insight of the apostle Paul to his young protégé Timothy. Timothy was not only young like you but also trying his best to lead a community in Ephesus that faced a lot of issues and uncertainties. So Paul reminds Timothy of a few things.

First Paul reminds Timothy that he is God’s child. That means that all that Timothy is and all that he will become is dependent upon God’s purposes. Paul then reminds Timothy that those purposes are tied up with the gospel he received.

Armed with the knowledge that he is God’s child and called to accomplish God’s purposes in line with the story of Jesus and his lordship, Timothy is charged to fight the good fight. He needs to keep pushing forward, despite any resistance or failures he might experience along the way. As he makes his way, Timothy needs to continue cultivating the fruit of the Spirit that indwells him, a life marked by faith, hope, and love.

I end this letter with the same charge to each of you. Enjoy the triumphs, and revel in the joy ahead of you. Face the challenges that will come your way, confident that God has a purpose for you. And as you make your way, never forget who you belong to and the ultimate destiny we share. We were made for God and for eternal fellowship with him and one another. Let this vision light your way.

In Christ,
Pastor Sam

Adopt a Reading Buddy
Hey, kids! This summer you can adopt a reading buddy! Come to the children’s wing this Sunday, May 22, to choose your Beanie Baby and pick up a Jesus Storybook Bible, if you need one. Spend time with God’s word while keeping your reading skills sharp by reading to your buddy this summer. There will be questions to answer and prizes when you return your buddy and the Bible on August 14. See you Sunday!
FPC Delivers for Harmony and Hope House
Throughout April we collected supplies for Harmony and Hope House, a transitional living facility for women striving to get back on their feet. Justin Miller delivered the items last week and spent time with Ann Davis, who oversees the house, and the women who live there. They expressed deep gratitude to our congregation for our help to them and for the beneficial effect we are having in the community.

Harmony and Hope House is the female counterpart of the Brothers for Christ Community Response ministry run by Stephen Davis. Both ministries focus primarily on providing a safe and stable environment for those recently released from prison or suffering from addiction. As a new addition to the ministry, the women’s house needed many home essentials, such as bedding and kitchenware, and our FPC community generously donated much of what was needed. We are looking into future projects to further assist Harmony and Hope House as we continue to develop partnerships with these ministries.
Last Chance to Buy Brazil Team Shirts
FPC’s 2022 Brazil Mission Team leaves for Natal June 5, carrying 140 Beanie Babies for the children of Felipe Camarão and, we hope, 140 special T-shirts. You can help the team by purchasing a T-shirt for a Bethel School student. We ask you to consider a $25 donation to buy one shirt for one student. Your donation will entitle you to a Brazil team T-shirt of your own.

We will be outside the fellowship hall with a display of shirts this Sunday morning. Please stop by, take a look, and write a check payable to FPC, memo: Brazil 2022. And please pray for our team: Alice and John Graham, Fernanda and Justin Miller, Teresa Mills, Mott and Chase Mitchell, Karen and John Vann, Sammy Weddington, and Linda Welch.
Changes to Our Graduate Info Request
We’ve extended the submission deadline for information about our 2022 graduates to this Monday, May 23, and changed the delivery address to our newsletter editor's email. We’re still asking for each graduate’s name; the school or program being completed; the degree, certificate, or rank achieved; and future plans, if applicable. We will celebrate all our graduates this Sunday and publish the most complete graduates list we have in next week’s Windows.
Sharing Christ June 4
The first Saturday in June will be our next opportunity to serve with the downtown Sharing Christ Mission. Please consider helping out!

We need volunteers to bake and deliver five more of our famous baked ziti casseroles, and people to donate two 32-oz. jars of grape jam and 60 bananas. We also need a team to make PB&J sandwiches and pack the lunches handed out to our dinner guests as they leave.

Anyone interested in participating in this ministry of spiritual and physical nourishment may text Beth Flannagan at 423-956-3837 or email her or text Becca Tate at 404-790-1223 or email her. We will keep you updated.

Save the Date:
VBS July 10–13

Vacation Bible School this year celebrates the greatness of God with a national parks theme, and we promise it will be Monumental! VBS will be held at the church on the evenings of July 10 through July 13. Want to help? Contact Lilly Osborne.

Our COVID Protocols
The session strongly encourages masks for those not fully vaccinated, or at higher risk of complications from COVID-19. The session encourages everyone to consult their medical professional about vaccinations and boosters.
Fairmount Field Day Fun
We welcomed the children of our neighborhood school to our campus last Friday, and are we glad we did! It was a joyful experience, as the kids ran and jumped in the sun, and the adults marveled at all the energy bounding about. The students ate lunch at the school, but FPC provided a special meal for the teachers and administrators. That's how we roll!

Organist's Footnotes
This week we focus on two pieces by Wilbur Held (1914–2015). A deeply thoughtful and meticulous musician, Held crafted elegant preludes, postludes, and hymn settings that remain central to the repertoire of church organists around the globe. Substantial yet accessible, his music reveals the truths of Scripture in the shape of a line, the content of a progression, the evolution of an idea across a work, and the attitude of humility they embody. Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than in his setting of the early American shape-note hymn KEDRON, our prelude. In 1946 (when this photo was taken) Held was named professor of organ at Ohio State University for what became a 30-year tenure. His organ studio grew quickly. Former students recall him as detailed and thorough, patient and kind. Hospitality was the order of the day as Held and his wife, artist Virginia Held, frequently hosted students in their gracious home.
Peter Scholtes (1938–2009) wrote the hymn “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love” while he was a parish priest at St. Brendan’s on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s. At the time, he was leading a youth choir out of the church basement and was looking for an appropriate song for a series of ecumenical, interracial events. When he couldn't find such a song, he wrote the now-famous hymn in a single day. I believe “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love” personally resonated with Wilbur Held, who as a conscientious objector in WWII, served his country as a civil servant. Held published his organ setting (our postlude) in 1984 and it remains to this day one of the very few settings of this hymn.
