Protecting Our Environment
March is the beginning of Central Texas Ozone Season, which lasts until the end of November. It's a good time to keep in mind practices that can keep our air clean. As Spring approaches, it's also an opportunity to remind residents of good recycling habits, and ways to help keep trash off of our roadways and out of our parks. Here are some steps you can take to keep our environment clean and healthy:

IMPROVING AIR QUALITY:
Ozone Season began this week, which is when the region is likely to experience elevated Ozone concentrations. There are small things you can do to reduce pollutants in the air, including limiting idling in your vehicle, carpooling if possible, combining errands to avoid multiple trips, and biking or walking to work if that's an option. CLICK HERE to learn more about what you can do to help reduce air pollution.

GOOD RECYCLING HABITS:
As a reminder, items such as food boxes, newspapers, glass jars, flattened cardboard, aluminum cans and paper bags ARE recyclable. However, items like plastic bags, wet or soiled paper, garden hoses, Styrofoam, light bulbs and electronics ARE NOT recyclable. It's also important NOT to bag recycling items when you put them out for pickup (in the blue carts) as they can get caught in the recycling machinery, and are also not recyclable. CLICK HERE for more recycling information and a list of other items you can and cannot recycle. Additionally, Public Works offers free brush and yard waste recycling at their location (3303 Serene Hills Drive) the first Thursday of each month. CLICK HERE for more details, and a list of materials accepted.

EARTH DAY VOLUNTEER EVENT:
The City of Lakeway will once again host a special Earth Day event at City Hall on Friday, April 22 during the lunch hours. Volunteers will be paired up and supplied with trash pickers, trash bags and safety vests, and then proceed to help pick up trash along our local roadways and area parks. CLICK HERE for more details and to fill out a short volunteer form if you're interested in participating.
