Partner with Iowa State University For Variable Rate Nitrogen Trials |
Iowa State University is looking for 500 fields for the 2024 crop season to test nitrogen rates. The trial is built into a variable rate prescription that works with the existing nitrogen program.
Five rates will be tested five times each in a small area (7-10 ac.) of the field. ISU is sent the as-applied file from the applicator and the yield file after harvest. Farmers and agronomists receive information on the optimum nitrogen rate for their fields. If a zero-applied nitrogen rate is included in the trial, growers receive a soil fertility test, soil nitrate testing throughout the growing season, and $600 to offset yield loss on the zero nitrogen plots (~1.5 acres total).
Variable rate application equipment is required to conduct the trials. If you apply variable rate nitrogen to your customers’ fields, please consider participating.

High School Pollinator Habitat Grants |
The following information comes from the Sand County Foundation which is looking for partners for their Pollinator Habitat Grant Program. Many agribusinesses may have land that would be suitable for this project. Additionally, this may be an opportunity to reach out to a school in your community.
Through Sand County Foundation’s Pollinator Habitat Grant Program, students grow native plants in greenhouses and then transplant them to nooks and crannies within the agricultural landscape. Teachers apply for the grants. Landowners provide teachers access to a small portion of land for students to seed native grasses and transplant native wildflowers to benefit pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and grassland birds. Project sites can range from 2500 square feet to a few acres in size. Landowners must assist in site preparation and maintenance to ensure success of the seeding and transplanting.
Teachers must submit proposals by November 17, 2023.
For more information visit the Sand County Foundation Website at:
www.sandcountyfoundation.org/schoolgrants
or contact Haley Diem at hdiem@sandcountyfoundation.org or by phone at (651)-303-8288.

The total number of birds in the U.S. affected by the 2022/2023 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak officially surpassed 60 million birds this week, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and APHIS confirmed Oct. 31 another positive case of HPAI in Buena Vista County, Iowa. The affected site is a commercial turkey flock of 30,000 birds. APHIS also reported a turkey flock of 29,700 birds in Beadle County, South Dakota, had been confirmed with the virus, as well as an upland gamebird operation of 296,500 birds in Chilton County, Alabama.
IDALS said commercial and backyard flock owners should continue to prevent contact between their birds and wild birds. Sick birds or unusual deaths among birds should be immediately reported to state or federal officials.
A highly contagious viral disease, HPAI can travel in wild birds without those birds appearing sick, but is often fatal to domestic bird populations, including chickens and turkeys. The virus can spread through the droppings or the nasal discharge of an infected bird, both of which can contaminate dust and soil.

An ag economist says it isn’t just the stronger U.S. dollar that’s been hurting ag exports.
Stephen Nicholson Global Strategist with RaboResearch says there are other factors coming into play. “You know, record corn and soybean production out of Brazil and so they’ve been extremely competitive in the marketplace,” he says. “And also Russia’s record wheat production and record wheat exports have also been tough on anyone else trying to compete in that marketplace going forward.”
He says he doesn’t anticipate the dollar moving from its current level anytime soon. “Because the Fed is extremely concerned about inflation and it doesn’t want inflation to get away from us, I think that will be supportive to the dollar,” he says. “People will flock to the dollar to buy the dollar because its interest rates are favorable from an investment standpoint of view.”
Sam Taylor, senior analyst for farm inputs says the Brazilian Real has also been a factor. “The Real had actually been outperforming the dollar and so that’s an important thing to keep in mind,” he says. “Yes, the strong dollar would have put pressure on exports, but you think about what your alternatives are, Brazil being an obvious one, they were increasing interest rates.”

The question for interest rates is no longer how high they'll go but how long they'll linger around current high levels before coming down.
At its latest meeting, which ended Nov. 1, the Fed held its benchmark interest rate steady in the range of 5.25% to 5.5% for the second meeting in a row following 11 consecutive increases. (Average borrowers' rates move higher with the Fed's benchmark; the 30-year-mortgage fixed rate recently hit 8%.)
While Fed chair Jerome Powell held open the possibility of another increase at a future meeting, many analysts think any such increase would be small. Others think the Fed is done raising. There's an emerging consensus that rates have peaked, or nearly so.
There's less consensus on how long before rates come down, partly because analysts are divided on the outlook for the economy. Many bond investors have been thinking the answer is, "longer than we previously expected." Goldman Sachs is telling clients it doesn't see the Fed cutting rates until the end of next year.
Expecting short-term rates to remain high longer, bond investors have been demanding higher yields to compensate for what they perceive as an increase in the risk of holding long-term debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note recently hit 5%, though it has come down a bit since.

The Iowa Pork Producers Association’s viral “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” marketing initiative with Iowa State University football players is adding a new element: linebacker Alec Cook.
Through an NIL (name, image, likeness) deal, Cook joins fellow Cyclones Myles Purchase, Tyler Moore, Tommy Hamann, and Caleb Bacon, encouraging Iowans to purchase pork products and, of course, cook more ham and bacon.
“We are so overjoyed with the great success of the ‘Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon’ campaign and love that we’re able to encourage people to Cook Moore Hamann Bacon as well,” said Iowa Pork Producers Association President Trish Cook, a pig farmer from Buchanan County.
