The Mitigwa Scout Reservation Pool and Fees Update
Please watch the attached message from Scout Executive Matt Hill for an update on the Mitigwa Pool and Camp Fees for 2024.
|
|
Through the efforts of our facilities volunteers and professional staff we have worked with area experts to identify the problems with the pool and come up with a plan so that the Mitigwa Pool will be operational for camp this summer.
The Mitigwa Scout Reservation Team has planning well underway for Summer 2024 at Camp Akela and Camp Mitigwa. There is a summer of adventure, service, and fun awaiting you and your Scouts. You can find details of fees for this summer in the Camp Highlights below.

Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is the highest award presented by the Boy Scouts of America, to council, district or unit volunteers for distinguished service to youth. Since then, of the thousands of volunteers who have served central Iowa youth, only 637 have received the Silver Beaver.
The Silver Beaver is given to those who implement the Scouting program and live its values through community service over many years. It is given to those who do not actively seek it.
Any adult may submit a nomination to recognize another leader with the Silver Beaver Award. You are welcome and encouraged to submit a nomination for a Scouting leader whom you feel deserves to be considered. Please keep in mind that your nominee will be considered solely on the information that you provide. Therefore, present your nominee's accomplishments in a clear and concise manner. Please do not inform the individual of the nomination that you are submitting.
The nomination deadline is November 15. Nominations must be submitted on an annual basis. Nominations not selected are returned to the person submitting the application so that they can be updated and resubmitted the following year.

Acknowledging the good you already have in your
life is the foundation for all abundance.
~Eckhart Tolle

One of my favorite Norman Rockwell paintings is “Freedom from Want”. I am sure that you have seen it, a family sitting at the Thanksgiving table, and a motherly figure holding a giant turkey, presenting it to the family. It inspires the feeling of warmth of family, and the abundance that life in America used to mean. For me it is a reminder to be grateful for all that I have in life, whatever it may be.
Being at camp full time is a job that I never thought I would have. Every day that I get to come to work and serve the Scouts and Scouters that utilize our facilities I count as a blessing. Another blessing that I count is the leadership provided to our Units. Every weekend I see units pull into camp, and the promise of Scouting springs to life because volunteers choose to share of themselves. We belong to a wonderful organization that allows us to share our gifts and talents with the next generation. I also count the Scouts as a gift and give thanks for them each day. In this day and age when it would be so very easy to stay at home and play video games, or stream movies all day, I am grateful to see the Scouts that choose to attend weekly meetings, work on advancements and come to camp. I remind myself each day that to serve others is the best way to have gratitude for the gifts and talents that I have.
As we close out this year, and look forward to 2024, may we all remember to be Grateful for who and what we have in our lives. May we remember, though they may not show it immediately, those we serve will be grateful. Finally, I want to give thanks to the many volunteers that help maintain camp, work with our Scouts, and demonstrate that to give of ourselves is the best way to show gratitude for what we have. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

Guide to Safe Scouting
All participants in official Scouting activities should become familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and applicable program literature or manuals, and be aware of state or local government regulations that supersede Boy Scouts of America practices, policies, and guidelines. The Guide to Safe Scouting is an overview of Scouting policies and procedures gleaned from a variety of sources. For some items, the policy statements are complete. Unit leaders are expected to review the additional reference material cited prior to conducting such activities.
In situations not specifically covered in this guide, activity planners should evaluate the risk or potential risk of harm, and respond with action plans based on common sense, community standards, the Scout motto, and safety policies and practices commonly prescribed for the activity by experienced providers and practitioners.
Perhaps this quote by Sir Robert Baden-Powell from his 1914 book Quick Training for War is appropriate to include here: “… The books lay down definite principles and examples which serve to guide the leaders when applying their common sense to the situation before them. No two situations are ever precisely the same, and it is therefore impossible to lay down exact rules that should guide in every case, but a man who carries precedents and principles in his head has no difficulty in applying their teaching in supreme moments of sudden emergency …”
