Summer 2023 FLAS Fellows

With Title VI funding from the U.S. Department of Education, CLAS is supporting seven undergraduate students and one graduate student with Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in Summer 2023.
Summer FLAS fellows receive support to participate in intensive language study at approved programs in the U.S. or abroad. This summer, four students will study Portuguese in São Paulo, Brazil, three will study Quechua in Lima, Peru, and one student will study Haitian Creole online.

We would also like to congratulate our CLAS Spring 2023 Student Intern Ella Meyer, who was awarded a summer FLAS fellowship by the Center for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies. Ella will study advanced Russian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

SPPO Seeks Associated Faculty
|
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese (SPPO) is seeking 10 Associated Faculty members to teach in its Spanish language program, to begin Autumn 2023.
Appointments are for 3 years and renewable based on positive performance. SPPO has begun to review applications, and interviewing will begin very soon. However, new applications are welcome and will be considered until all positions are filled.

"Latin America and the World" Film Series
|
In September and October 2023, CLAS will partner with Columbus State Community College to host a six-film series entitled "Latin America and the World" in which each film connects Latin America to one or more world regions.
All film screenings will be held on campus and will feature a Q&A with regional and topical experts. An online streaming option will also be available for one week after each film. The films to be shown are:

This Spanish Film Club series is made possible with the support of Pragda, SPAIN arts &
culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain, with further support from Ohio State's Area Studies Centers and several campus departments.

2023 Outreach & Engagement Funded Grant Proposals
|
More than 14 proposals, constituting more than $250,000 total, were recently selected for funding through the Outreach and Engagement grants process. Awarded projects related to Latin America included:
Stephanie Aubry's project to strengthen the partnership between the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Proyecto Mariposas, a local non-profit that supports Latino girls and mothers that have recently immigrated to the U.S.
Laura Lopez's project Latinx in STEM, a new astronomy and STEM outreach initiative created as an extension of the Department of Astronomy Planetariums Program. Part of the project is the creation of 30-minute planetarium shows in Spanish at the Ohio State Planetarium.

2023-24 Global Fellowship Program: Women's Rights & Issues around the World
|
This year's Global Fellowship Program will focus on women's rights and issues across the globe. Participating educators will explore the histories and accomplishments of feminist activists in Africa, East Asia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Topic sessions will discuss historical and contemporary women’s issues unique to each region, their intersectionality with other identities, and the work of activists, with the goal of giving participants a better, more global understanding.
This program is free, virtual, and open to pre- and in-service educators, community college educators, and K-14 administrators. The cohort size will be limited to 30 participants. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive curricular resources, pedagogical support, and continuing education units.
The program schedule will consist of one orientation session, 4-5 regional topic lecturess, and one pedagogy session. Sessions will take place on select Saturdays during the ademic year from 9am to noon (EST) online via Zoom. A more detailed schedule will be released in late May 2023.

Wibbelsman Awarded Engagement Funding
|
CLAS Faculty Affiliate Michelle Wibbelsman, Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, has recently received funding in support of her work on Latin American Indigenous cultures.
The funded projects include:
- Kawsay Ukhunchay Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Art and Cultural Artifacts Research Collection--Diversity Impact and Community Collaboration, supported with $32,800 from Ohio State Energy Partners
- Dancing with Devils: Latin American Masks Traditions National Traveling Exhibition, supported with $4,500 from the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Engagement
These projects will significantly enhance Ohio State's Latin American outreach and engagement activities. Please join us in congratulating Michelle on these achievements!

Textos Híbridos Vol. 10, N. 1
|
The Spring 2023 issue of Textos Híbridos, a journal dedicated to the critical study of the Latin American chronicle from the 19th century to the present, is now available.
The theme of this issue is "Anomalías y fugas de la crónica: cuerpo, género y disidencia sexual."
The journal is supported by the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Santiago de Chile), as well as The Ohio State Univesrity Center for Latin American Studies and Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
