To Junior Sailing Families and their Junior Sailing Programs,

Topics in this email include: National Safe Boating Week, June Event Schedule with Preseason Clinic, College Sailing Nationals, updating the Junior Sailor Roster, and Mission of the JSA.
National Safe Boating Week is celebrated during this week before the Memorial Day Holiday. Wearing a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD), is a basic element of safe boating. It must be the appropriate size for a sailor's body weight and chest size, so it will need to be replaced as a young sailor grows. The label on the PFD must state it is certified by the US Coast Guard. And the PFD must be worn properly fastened and fitted whenever a sailor is on a boat, or near the water on a dock. Full info about how to select and wear a properly sized PDF may be found here.
The first event on the summer calendar for juniors is the JSA Preseason Clinic on June 24-25 at Stamford Yacht Club. With support from Oyster Bay Sailing Foundation, the JSA has provided this clinic for almost thirty years.

The clinic will have sections for sailors who are:
– Developing their skills after moving to Club 420s, Fevas and ILCAs(Lasers) from other boat types
– Preparing to compete at regattas early this summer, like the Law Trophy regatta immediately afterwards on June 26-27
– Striving to succeed at JSA’s Club 420, Feva and ILCA(Laser) championships in late summer.

The JSA has recruited an excellent group of coaches for this clinic that will again be headed by Henry Millette, sailing director at Indian Harbor YC. Three assistant coaches have specific experience in the Club 420 (Brendan Feeney), the ILCA (Laser - Cori Radtke, and the RS Feva (Ben Cripton).

Families may review the clinic details and then register for the clinic through the JSA website.
Late-June, July and August are the dates when summer events are scheduled on the JSA calendar.

Other events in June include instructor training courses, and meetings of leaders at JSA member junior sailing programs as they prepare for opening summer junior sailing programs in just a few weeks.

The 2023 College Sailing National Championships started this week at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY, and will continue through June 2.

Former junior sailors from our region who are now competing for their college sailing teams may be watched from home on the live stream through June 2nd or viewed onsite from the USMMA waterfront using these viewing tips

Social media will be updated each day with the latest photos, and stories about the racing.

Junior Sailor Roster: The JSA Roster Registration and Regatta Management system is supported by Clubspot, a web-based administration platform. Parents may activate each junior sailor’s JSA member record for the current year by using this link to the JSA Roster. Updating each junior sailor's record now will prepare them for easy registration by their sailing program's office if they want to attend regattas hosted by JSA member clubs during the summer. And the active JSA member record will enable each sailor and/or their parent to receive periodic news emailed from the JSA.
Mission: The Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound supports junior sailors at our member programs by fostering and coordinating programs and activities that encourage juniors to experience the joy of sailing and instill a life-long love of this great sport. Through its programs and policies, the JSA supports both serious competitors and recreational sailors at all levels of skill and encourages their sailing in local waters and beyond. You may read the full Mission Statement on the JSA website.
Best wishes for fair winds during the summer junior sailing activities,

Bob Whittredge
