Thank you to our Peabody Families!

Last week we had a wonderful Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week celebration! Our theme was Around the World and we invited our Peabody teachers and staff to travel with us. We started in the USA with a wonderful hometown breakfast buffet. Then we traveled to France where we welcomed everybody to the Peabody Café. Wednesday, we asked everyone to grab a goodie bag and visit each of the 7 continents. There were hot and cold snacks, savory and sweet, some were homemade and others were sourced from some of our Charlottesville restaurants. The next day, was Cinco de Mayo and we invited our teachers and staff to a Fiesta complete with music, taco bar, and delicious drinks from our local Latino market. Our final day was a Teacher Workday, which meant it was time for a Caribbean Island feast catered by Pearl Island!

All of this could not be possible without the generous contributions and outpouring of love from our Peabody families. The Peabody Parent Association would like to especially thank our volunteers for working with the planning group and helping to put together this event for our Peabody Community: Lauren Baum, Barbara Baumbusch, Caroline Brennan, Taylor Cady, Lea Doise, Courtney Doyle, Marianne Kish, Michelle Krentz, Paige Nolt, and Camerin Swazer. PPA would also like to thank the following generous vendors who donated to our event: New Dominion Bookstore, Mill Creek Orthodontics, and Pearl Island Catering.

It truly was an amazing week to celebrate the wonderful people that teach, nurture and care for our children every day.

Support the Middle School DEI Council!

We are proud that two of our middle school students, Sienna Robinson & Rose Brennan-Wilkinson, were selected to attend the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Middle School Summit earlier this spring.

Since attending the Summit, Sienna & Rose have been working with Ms. Wynn and Ms. Young to establish Peabody's first Middle School DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Council.

As this school year winds down, the DEI Council is inviting families to support our continuing effort to add more diverse voices to our library collection. To donate a book:
2) Search for "Peabody School"
3) Click "Shop Now"
4) Click "School Wish Lists" (in the top blue bar)
5) Select and purchase any books from the "DEI Council List 2022"

Books can be shipped directly to Peabody School (please include a gift note so we know who it is from) or you can bring the book into school after it is shipped to you directly. Donations should go to Mary Beth Perry with a note indicating "DEI Council List" -- we'll include a "donated by" bookplate with your name! Thank you for your support of this wonderful project!

Seeking Arts & Enrichment Instructors

Do you have a special skill, talent, or interest that you'd like to share with our Peabody middle school students? We are recruiting parents interested in teaching a 5th-8th grade Arts & Enrichment course next school year. These courses meet once per week and last one semester each. A huge thank you to our parents who have taught A&E classes this year and in previous years! Topics have included World Religious Celebrations, Basketball Skills, Photography, Table Tennis, Native Plant Landscapes, etc. If you are interested please email vyoung@peabodyschool.org
Concert Videos

Important announcement regarding end-of-year concerts: This year, instead of the traditional end-of-year music concerts, each music performance class from Kindergarten to 8th grade will be filming 1-3 songs they have been working on throughout the course of the year. These videos will be compiled into a "Peabody School Concert" video, much like this year's Talent Show. These will only be distributed to Peabody families and be available for a short amount of time. Please let Ms. Colleen know if you DO NOT want your child's image included in one of these videos. Thank You!

Hamilton Contest Winners

In the fall of 2019, the sixth graders (current Grade 8) researched a variety of people and events from America's Founding Era and created 2-minute performance pieces based on primary documents. This project stems from an invitation through the Gilder Lehrman Institute and Lin-Manuel Miranda. One winner was chosen from Peabody and had the chance to receive an all-expenses paid trip to New York and watch a Broadway performance of "Hamilton."

Ryan Kish, Asher Grunden, and Asher Marini won as a lottery selection! They were originally scheduled to go to New York in 2020 but that was delayed due to COVID. They finally went this past week!

On Wednesday, the boys saw Hamilton from their VIP seats! After the show, the cast went to change for the Q&A portion. While they were changing, they were treated to a surprise guest visit. Before they knew it, Lin Manuel Miranda was on stage congratulating them and welcoming them back to the theater. The cast shared stories of resilience, creativity, talent, rejection, hard work, and goal-setting.

They wrapped up their trip with a tour of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History collection. They have original documents that they will be sharing with their classmates!
