Dr. Vandana Shiva
UCGHI is pleased to announce Dr. Vandana Shiva, as a plenary speaker for this year's UC Global Health Day on May 7, 2022. Dr. Shiva is a physicist, philosopher, proponent of non-violent collective action and activist for food sovereignty, environmental justice, ecofeminism and the anti-globalization movement. Dr. Shiva shares how her upbringing fostered her commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity.

UC Spring 2022 Online Course Enrollment Open
There are a wide variety of fascinating online global health courses and other disciplines taught by expert faculty and available to UC students across all 10 campuses via UC Online. Satisfy degree requirements or explore new subjects with the convenience and flexibility of online learning.

Students can take courses such as VME057V Global Population, health & environment which is being offered Spring 2022, and is instructed by UCGHI Planetary Health Center of Expertise co-Director, Dr. Woutrina Smith and Deputy Director, Dr. Federico Castillo.
Call for Graduate Student Research Fellowship Proposals in Women's Health, Gender and Empowerment

The UCGHI Women's Health, Gender, and Empowerment Center of Expertise (COE) will fund up to $2,500 to support University of California graduate students pursuing fellowships during the summer of 2022. 

This opportunity is for University of California graduate students across the 10 UC campuses to provide seed funding for research projects of their own design. Research projects should be innovative and in the areas of women’s health, gender justice, and/or empowerment.

Applications must be submitted by March 18th, 2022 at 5:00 pm (PT).

Internship Opportunities in Women's Health, Gender and Empowerment

The UCGHI Women's Health, Gender, and Empowerment Center of Expertise (COE) is coordinating internship opportunities from health-related and non-profit organizations, government agencies, research centers and university departments. Internships are available to all current University of California (UC) undergraduate students.

Applications must be submitted by March 18th, 2022 at 5:00 pm (PT).

Congratulations to Advances in Global Health (AGH) for Publishing First Articles!

AGH is an open-access, online-only journal from University of California Press and UCGHI, that takes a new approach to publishing research in the field of global health by aligning the journal with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.


Dr. Oladele Ogunseitan elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology
Congratulations to Oladele “Dele” Ogunseitan, PhD, UC Presidential Chair and professor of population health and disease prevention with the UCI Program in Public Health and UCGHI Education Director , who was recently selected to serve as a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology, one of the largest life sciences societies in the world.

On Feb 9, 2022, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Navajo Department of Health (NDOH) Executive Director Dr. Jill Jim met with Health Equity, Action & Leadership Initiative (HEAL) in Window Rock, Arizona.

UCSF Health and Human Rights Initiative Provides Services to Asylum Seekers and Training for Clinicians
The UCSF Health and Human Rights Initiative (HHRI) is a 2021 UCGHI Incubator Award recipient and oversees the UCSF Human Rights Collaborative (HRC), a monthly student-run clinic that provides free forensic medical evaluations to help asylum seekers escape extreme violence and persecution.

These clinics have supplied thousands of pro bono medical affidavits to asylum-seekers and the program provides trainings in forensic evaluations for clinicians.

Seeking Mentors and Mentee opportunities for National Science Foundation AGILE Program
The new National Science Foundation program, Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in Geoscience: Inclusivity, Leadership, and Experience or AGILE, aims to increase undergraduate AAPI participation in the geosciences through research internships and one-on-one mentoring. AGILE strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups, and first generation college students.
