IMPORTANT UPDATE ON COVID-19

Grand Traverse County is now at a "high" community COVID-19 spread risk. Affirming the recommendations of the CDC for our area, the UUCGT Board passed at last night's Board Meeting a requirement for all to mask while indoors. All persons attending services in-person are required to wear masks. We will also not be serving food or drink during Coffee Hour following the service, though we welcome people to attend for a time of fellowship and conversation. Children and youth are welcomed to attend services masked with their families.

EMBRACING THE

8TH PRINCIPLE

______________________________

We will explore together the proposed 8th Principle that commits us to intentionally becoming an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and a multicultural institution.

Over the course of 25 years, our 1st Principle of the inherent worth and dignity of every person seems to have left us with blind spots that have made progress difficult. Let’s dig into what our roles might be in creating safe and just places for all people.

A service led by

Mary Van Valin and Pam Hendrick,

with Rev. Alex Jensen.

Memorial Service for

Robert "Bob" Doughty

___________________________________

Bob Doughty.jpeg

Please join us this Saturday in celebrating the life of our beloved member Bob Doughty on May 14th, 2022 at 2:00 PM.

B0b was a deep thinker and a kind soul, with involvements in several Unitarian Universalist congregations. At the congregations in Detroit and Southfield, Bob took on many leadership positions and was passionate about social justice and action. In our congregation, Bob chaired the Endowment Committee and cared deeply for the support of our congregation and its ministry to the wider community and world.

The service will be held in our Sanctuary and live-streamed on our YouTube Channel.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION

UUCGT's by-laws call for the Congregation's Annual Meeting to be held on or before the 1st Sunday in June. (The pandemic shifted the scheduling of the previous two years.) This year that will be Sunday, June 5th.

UUCGT BYLAWS AMENDMENTS

as of APRIL 2022

Following direction from the UUCGT Board at its March 9, 2022 a Bylaws Task Force was formed to draft proposed changes to the Bylaws regarding ARTICLE IV. MEMBERSHIP.  During their work additional changes were suggested for ARTICLE II. PURPOSE. Task Force members: Chris Lautz (Membership), Mike McDonald (Finance), Judy Myers (Stewardship and Board), Mary Van Valin (Program Council), Chris Walter (Board and Membership), Jane Watts (Membership and Program Council), and Rick Walter (ex-officio, Program Council).

Click here to see the proposed changes. Current words suggested for change are printed in red strikethrough and new proposed words are green.

Candidates for Offices, 22-23

This year's candidates, nominated by the Leadership Development Team, may be viewed here.

Should the UUCGT adopt the proposed 8th Principle?

A decision facing the Congregation is whether or not to adopt the proposed 8th Principle of Unitarian Universalism. This will be discussed at the Annual Meeting as well. Visit this link for more on where the 8th Principle came from, and how and why other Congregations are adopting it.

The proposed 8th Principle states:

"We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse and multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions."

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes you to donate to UUCGT's Endowment Fund and to the Inland Seas Education Association in Bob's name to honor his memory.

Don Fraser

Nancy Fraser writes that "Don has moved to Orchard Creek's Supportive Care Program." His new address there is:

Room #4

She says further: "Thank you all once again, for reaching out to Don with your thoughtful notes and cards.  He loves looking at them every day."

Help Ukraine Garage Sale!

Thanks to all of you (and there are MANY) who so selflessly stepped up to make the Help Ukraine Garage Sale a huge success!

With the addition of a few late donors, this week we were able to mail $6,229 to Doctors Without Borders, which was about double our expectations. It was a true act of love and beauty to see congregants working together for three days to make this happen, with the final pricing stickers going on about 10 minutes before doors opened! (In the world of manufacturing, this would be referred to as just in time pricing!)

The generous donations flowed in for two days straight and on Friday afternoon it looked like there would be no way to turn the chaos into an actual garage sale. But we now know to never to doubt the organizational skills of the volunteers who worked diligently right up to 9 a.m. on Saturday, when the crowds just about rushed the doors!

We are eternally grateful for the magnanimous donors, sorters, pricers, stagers, cashiers, vacuuming experts, sign makers, sign holders, packers and haulers who made this all happen. You are amazing!
