In 2021, we created a new feature we call our ‘Global Leader Interviews’. In them, you will hear from international leaders and innovators from diverse organizations on a broad range of contemporary challenges.

The Minderoo-Monaco Commission Report on Plastics and Human Health, led by CUGH Board member, Dr. Phil Landrigan, Director of the Global Public Health Program at Boston College, was just published in the Annals of Global Health. This report addresses an important and neglected global threat to the health of people and that of our planet. Please see, use, and share this important report which can be found here.

Implementing what we know can be done across the life cycle of plastic to reduce the amount of plastic in our environment is critically important to reducing the impact of this substance on our health and that of the global biosphere.

Access to quality geriatric care is a global challenge but especially so in low-resource settings. These two reports created by CUGH’s Workforce Capacity Building Subcommittee Members Dr. Barbara Kamholz & Dr. Suraj Bhattarai contain a wealth of information, recommendations, and links that can assist health systems and policymakers strengthen care for the aged. Please use and share them widely.

The President’s Budget for FY2024 has been released. Now, the US Congress has begun the long process of negotiating over what will be spent next year. Funding for programs at NIH, CDC, etc are at grave risk, so now is the time to approach your congresspersons (repeatedly) and seek their support for federally funded global health programs. Here are our asks and talking points you can use when you meet with your congresspersons' offices in your state. We will be meeting with congressional offices on Capitol Hill on April 11.

Contact, write and call your representatives’ offices repeatedly over the next month. Feel free to use our talking points.

Please see and share this paper which discusses the public health issue of traffic accidents in South Africa and the inequitable protection provided to a large proportion of road users, especially in low- and middle income countries like South Africa. This paper examines the differentiated risk of road traffic crashes and injuries to vulnerable road users in South Africa, including pedestrians, females and users of some modes of public. Read the paper here.

Please save the date (1-3 August 2023). Your opportunity to submit an abstract will open soon. See the event webpage here.

These are critical investments that strengthen our ability to prevent, detect and respond to potential pandemics.
