Local Artists to Exhibit at

Firehouse Gallery in Charles Town

Local artists Doug Kinnett, Kirsten Lee, Susan Loonsk and Annette Verna, known as the Art Review, Reflect and Revise Group (ARRRG!) will display their work at the Firehouse Gallery in Charles Town, WV from Thursday, November 2 through Sunday, November 26, 2023

ARRRG! was established for members to share their work in progress, ask questions, offer suggestions, and give constructive feedback. Positive discussion provides forward progress for each group member, illuminating new possibilities and ideas for future development. The exhibit will feature paintings, photography, prints, mixed media, assemblage, and ceramics.

Painter Doug Kinnett is the originator of the group, having encouraged artists to gather for discussions over the years. His work focuses on art with abstract, organic forms and geometric shapes; bold colors and imaginative patterns. "Visually, my work is often complex, cramming three or four layers of patterns into the space of the canvas” Doug has been an exhibiting artist/painter and printmaker since the 1970s, with a long list of local, regional, and national shows to his credit. He holds a master’s degree in Painting and a Doctorate in Art Education.

Kirsten Lee is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist. Inspired by the unruly mysteries of nature, she seeks “the soul of a space, the space of a soul” through exuberant brushstrokes, experimental photography, and spontaneous wordplay. Kirsten teaches classes and is involved in several local arts organizations including the Berkeley Arts Council, the Jefferson Arts Council, the Appalachian Pastel League, the Shepherdstown Friday Painters, and Sisters in Art.

Susan Loonsk’s multi-media 2-D and 3-D works merge images, objects, photos, audio and speak to the world around us, usually with a twist and humor. Some of her pieces have been subjected to months of frigid temperatures, dollar store plastics, fire, ice, flood waters, paint, and lots of glue. Susan is a Professor Emerita of Art, Art Therapy, and Ecopsychology and a Board Certified, Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC). She taught at the University of Wisconsin – Superior for many years and now teaches at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in Martinsburg.

Annette Verna is a ceramic artist inspired by time and nature. She is interested in geologic formations and our connection to landscape. Her current work is a response to what she finds beautiful in our world: the cracks, crevices, and layers of rock; scars and imperfections; crumbling and decay. “I create modern forms with simple surfaces and use a primitive firing technique called pit firing.” Annette's work has been in juried exhibits at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Delaplaine Arts Center, and the Tamarack David L. Dickirson Fine Art Gallery.

The Firehouse Gallery is located at 108 N. George Street in Charles Town, WV. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday, and Sunday 11am - 5pm and Saturday 10am - 4pm.

HCC students to perform “And Then They Came for Me”

Students from Hagerstown Community College’s Introduction to Theater course will perform “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank,” on Friday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov 18, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Kepler Black Box Theater on HCC’s main campus.

The production is a poignant, multimedia play by award-winning playwright, James Still, weaving videotaped interviews of two teen-age friends of Anne Frank – Holocaust survivors Eva Schloss and Ed Silverberg – with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during WWII. The message of “And Then They Came for Me” resonates beyond the 20th century genocide in Europe. This powerful play speaks to the senseless persecution of people worldwide based on nationality, religion, race, and gender.

Director Mike Harsh has teamed up with former HCC student, Josiah Hixon, who is serving as the associate director of the production. Hixon went on from HCC to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Since then, he has worked in a variety of capacities on Broadway and off-Broadway, in London’s West End Theater District, and in TV and film. He is excited to return to HCC to share his experiences with this production and its cast.

Others involved in the production include Jason Buhrman as technical director, Robin Shaner as costume designer, Marlie Mitchell as technical assistant, Beebs as costume assistant, and Nevaeh Horst-Wade and Kahrisa Mann as assistant producers.

Cast members include Dorothy Brown, Ethan Buhrman, Isaiah Cook, Ellie Davis, Jonathan Diloy, Ian Ekins, Jade Fraction, Hassan Keller, Erin Kellogg, Jasmine Leonard, Luke Malott, Jennafer Pasch, Maisah Poindexter, Khaylee Porter, Victoria Queen, Yasmine Rodriguez, Ryland Simpson, and Hannah Webster.

General admission is $5, and seating is limited. HCC students, staff, and faculty can attend for free. To purchase tickets online, visit https://hcckepler.square.site/.

The production contains material depicting Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. It is produced through special arrangements with the Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Ill. For more information, contact director Mike Harsh at mgharsh@hagerstowncc.edu.
