Questions to ask your student:

Have you met with your academic advisor yet? If so, what have you discussed with your advisor?
Do you know what classes you are taking next semester? (Spring Registration is in November)
Have you met with any of your professors outside of class?
Do you know where to get help with tutoring, writing, math, etc. if you need it?

Midterm Check Ins

Midterms are almost here and stress may be ramping up. Remind your student to take advantage of professor office hours, tutoring, study groups, and the counseling center.

Mid-terms can be a reality check for some students. It's a good time to check in with your student to see if they need extra help with their courses. Here is a great article on what to talk about and what to avoid.

Scholarships

This may seem early but a lot of private scholarships have end-of-year deadlines, so if your student needs scholarships for next year, now is the time to start looking. Here are a few links to have your student check out.

We have a policy that we do not post any specific private scholarship opportunities on our Financial Aid Webpage so your student will have to do some research. If your student would like to talk to a financial advisor, encourage them to make an appointment now to talk about next year.

Managing Stress and Anxiety

Undoubtedly, your student will struggle with both stress and anxiety during their college experience. However, it can be hard to tell if your student is struggling with just stress or if it is anxiety that may need attention from a professional. This article will help you understand the two and help you recognize the signs and symptoms. Our CAPS office offers excellent resources for dealing with both stress and anxiety. If your student needs help, please refer them to any of the resources below.

On Campus Resources:

Mental Health Support Peers: talk to a peer mentor who has a good understanding of mental health related issues
CAPS Let’s Talk: 15-minute conversations with CAPS staff
CAPS Triage Appointment: 30 minute assessment with a CAPS counselor
CAPS Therapy Groups: Group sessions facilitated by a CAPS counselor
CAPS Workshops: Skill-based sessions with other students facilitated by a CAPS counselor
Dean of Students Office: Assistance navigating all of the resources at SUU
Find a counselor in the local community: some health insurance covers mental health care

CAREER CENTER

Graduate Fair

Held each fall, the Graduate School Fair is for students who are planning on attending graduate school or exploring graduate school as an option. Here, students can network with graduate school representatives and ask questions. Graduate schools from across the nation and internationally attend.

FAFSA

The 2023-2024 FAFSA is OPEN!

We highly recommend having your student fill out the FAFSA early so that they don't have to stress over it later. If your student has any questions about FAFSA or needs help getting it filled out, please have them set up an appointment with Financial Wellness.

You may also have heard about the Consolidated Appropriations Act (FAFSA Simplification Act) passed by Congress in 2020. What's changing about the form, and what will it mean for your family? How will it impact your student's award? Please read this article to understand what has changed.
