President's Message
Our chapter joins health and advocacy organizations across the region in recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Chapter members have been diligently advocating at the state and federal levels for policies that would begin to address the child mental health crisis.
|
|
Our commitment to this issue is also reflected in the agenda for the upcoming annual Advances in Pediatrics symposium, which will take place this Saturday, May 20, at UCLA. We hope you will join us!
The symposium features three sessions on child mental health. Dr. Cheryl Green, author of Heal Your Daughter: How Lifestyle Psychiatry Can Save Her from Depression, Cutting, and Suicidal Thoughts, will present: "The Crisis in Adolescent Girls’ Mental Health: How Lifestyle Psychiatry Can Help". Dr. Natalie Cruz will present: "The Journey of Undocumented, Latinx Immigrant Youth: Mental Health Considerations". Finally, Dr. Janet Charoensook will present on acute mental health care: "My child needs help! What do I do now? – How to handle psychiatric emergencies."
In addition to mental health, there will be presentations on other topics relating to clinical pediatric care, advocacy, and practice management. We will have 14 speakers and a total of 16 sessions, including the impact of air quality on child health, media training, reproductive health, febrile infants, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, and gender-affirming care. Please click on this link to review the full agenda and register.
I would like to thank Dr. Lulua Mandviwala and Dr. Mia Lagunda (both chapter board members) for hosting an outstanding social event in Bakersfield. I enjoyed meeting pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists practicing in Kern County, and hearing about the amazing work they are doing to care for the children and families of that region. I also appreciated the opportunity to meet representatives from our co-sponsors, Kern Medical and Clinica Sierra Vista. We hope to have many more such events in Kern as well as the other counties of the chapter!
I would also like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Upcoming events in this month’s newsletter include:
May 20 | AAP-CA2 Advances in Pediatrics Symposium at UCLA
May 31 | Everybody Deserves Healthcare (Webinar)
July 11 | LAC DPH/AAP Pediatric Information Session
I hope you have a wonderful month!
Best wishes,
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Danielle Shaw, MD, FAAP, FAPA
April showers bring May flowers. For those who are struggling with a mental health issue or have a loved one with a mental health issue, April showers are the tears we shed over not having access to the services needed to bring the May flowers of recovery.
My story regarding lack of access to mental health services is both personal and professional. As a parent, I was unable to obtain adequate mental health services for my daughter, whom I adopted at birth. Despite being a pediatrician, I didn’t know how to help her. Continue reading...

Thank you to all who attended the Kern Social on April 29th.
Co-Sponsored by Kern Medical and Clinica Sierra Vista
Kern County Representative Dr. Lulua Mandviwala, and Member-At-Large Dr. Mia M. Lagunda were the hosts of the Kern County Social, held at The Padre Hotel in Bakersfield on April 29th. Attendees included pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists and staff. This event was an opportunity to share stories from recent travels abroad, as well as common trends in local pediatric care and to network professionally. This was the first ever social event in Kern County. The next event will be a dinner/lecture/Town Hall after the summer.

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
Effective April 18, 2023, the FDA amended the emergency use authorization for Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 updated bivalent mRNA vaccines and withdrew the authorization for the monovalent products. The Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met on April 19, 2023 to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine changes and the CDC made the following recommendations to the vaccine schedule:
For people ages 6 years and older who are unvaccinated or previously received only monovalent vaccine doses, the recommendations were simplified to receive 1 updated mRNA vaccine dose
For young children under age 6 years, multiple doses are still recommended. The vaccine schedule guidance requires careful attention to the patient’s age and history of vaccination, including product type and number of doses administered.
Children who are moderately or severely immunocompromised will require additional doses for their primary series and have an option to receive 1 or additional updated mRNA doses.

“Everybody Deserves Healthcare”
No Child is an Island
Medical bills bankrupted mom & dad. So, 5-year-old Mason became homeless.
Financing is upstream from virtually everything in pediatrics and in healthcare. This presentation explores how and why our healthcare financing system is broken…harming children, families, pediatricians and our entire society…and how we can make universal and better.
|
|
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- To better understand the inadequacies of, and downstream harms caused by, our current healthcare financing system.
- To better understand how universal, affordable, equitable healthcare can be achieved through a unified system of public financing.
Presented by: Robert Vinetz, MD, FAAP
