~November 2022~

From the Desk of Darrel Burnett

Executive Director

The looming “time change” this Sunday November 6th started me thinking about just how much “times have changed.” I started doing some digging and found out that 96 years ago this month, November 11th to be specific, the United States introduced numbered highways. That discovery didn’t intrigue me nearly as much as wondering how anyone got anywhere for the first 150 years of this country’s existence.

Of course, there were trains, but that was only for people going where the train was going. What if Aunt Martha didn’t live anywhere near any of those cities or towns? That was pretty much the vast majority of America wasn’t it?

We’ve had automobiles in some form or another since the turn of the 20th century. How did they know where to go? If you dare to remember what life was like before GPS, which I personally think is one of the top ten inventions in history, then you remember building extra time into nearly every trip for “getting lost” or stopping at gas stations to ask directions as if the person behind the counter had a PhD in cartography.

Perhaps Dad was too proud to stop and ask directions. That was great for family closeness wasn’t it? Maybe you even tried reading a map. That sounds practical….unless you have tried reading a map of inner city Chicago for instance. I speak from experience when I say that exercise will get you lost without putting the car in gear!

I know we have Gallery Times readers from all over the U.S. and select parts of the world, so I ask your indulgence when I share with great pride that the State of Wisconsin was the first in America to replace trail signs with actual numbers. In effect, Wisconsin created the first “sophisticated” highway system. Believe me, I was as surprised as you are to learn that. My guess would have been New York, Pennsylvania, or a locale within shouting distance of where the Pilgrims landed. Wisconsin had that great idea clear back in 1917 and put it into action May 24th, 1918.

Just think how far we have travelled in just over 100 years, literally. If you are so inclined you can drive 3,365 uninterrupted miles through 12 states on one single patch of pavement, U.S. Route 20.

Given that November is the month of Thanksgiving, forget about that last pothole that nearly swallowed your vehicle whole and let’s be thankful for all of those who paved the way to our prosperity. I hope your road leads to The Automobile Gallery & Event Center. We would love to see you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fun Car Fact

George Lucas’s first choice of careers wasn’t Hollywood director……it was professional race car driver. Instantly successful on the track, a serious accident in his Autobianchi Bianchina race car just days before graduating high school in 1962 forced Lucas to rethink his future….and ours, literally. Lucas enrolled in film school at the University of Southern California where his first student film was named 1:42:08 about a race car driver attempting to beat a qualifying time. Even as a young student at USC, Lucas had a vision for a series of sci-fi movies which eventually became the Star Wars blockbusters followed by a quartet of Indiana Jones movies. George Lucas’s story has a true Hollywood ending. He became perhaps the most influential director in the world or is it Galaxy?

So Long but not Goodbye

With both sadness and great anticipation, we say farewell to our beloved Pit Crew Chief George Yursis as he begins his first official day of retirement today. While we will dearly miss his wonderful personality and eternal smile at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center, we are thrilled for George and his lovely wife Cheryl as they prepare to travel and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

We used to joke that George came with the building and that isn’t entirely incorrect. Years before The Automobile Gallery & Event Center came into existence, George maintained our late founder William “Red” Lewis’ classic car collection. As the Gallery came into being nearly eight years ago, George’s MacGyver-like abilities made him the marvel of our entire team. As our collection has continued to expand to well over 150 vehicles, George’s leadership and mechanical abilities have helped keep our prized possessions pampered and performing at their peak.

While we are sad that George will be leaving us on a day-to-day basis, we’re also happy to report that he will be popping in from time to time to say hello and to pitch in as his schedule allows.

Congratulations George!

Welcome Dave Van Ess!

We’re thrilled to welcome Dave Van Ess to The Automobile Gallery & Event Center family. Dave comes on board as our new Pit Crew Chief following the retirement of George Yursis. Dave is a bonafide “car guy” who enjoyed a 29-year career with Green Bay Packaging before retiring. Dave isn’t any stranger to being around beautiful vehicles like those featured in our Gallery collection. A skilled builder of custom cars, no fewer than four of Dave’s builds have been featured in national magazines. His current ride is a 1941 Dodge that he rescued from obscurity and brought back to life with a few added touches.

Make sure to stop in and welcome Dave on your next visit to The Automobile Gallery & Event Center!
