From Fr. Mike Gabriel

The sacraments of Christian initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist - lay the foundations of every Christian life That we are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life.

On Saturday, May 14, we joyfully celebrate the First Communion of 38 young women and men. Our communicants, from NCA and St. Gertrude's Religious Education, will all be dressed up in their finery for this joyous event.

First Communion is indeed a cause for celebration and should be memorable as a holy and special day of being welcomed to the table of the Lord. It really can be a challenge to keep focused on the meaning of First Communion, with all the trappings of clothing and parties.

I once heard a speaker say, if a child’s First Communion is their best Communion, then we have failed. It may be a child’s first communion, but don’t forget they will be receiving the sacrament every time they gather at the table of the Lord.

I think back to an analogy of growing up, we had the kid’s table and the big people’s table during the holidays. When we finally got to move up to the big table, we didn’t get dressed up and no fuss was made about it. All of us, I hope, remember that each time we receive the Sacrament of Eucharist we should reflect on its significance.

Parents, I pray that you bring your children often to the table, so they experience the sacrifice and love of God in their reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. Nothing could top that.

This Sunday, we will have our parish May Crowning. All through the month of May, we honor the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Today, we thank God for the gift of mothers and mothering across the world. Isaiah wrote that God is a mother to us, comforting and carrying us in her arms. “As one whom a mother comforts, so will I comfort you.” ~ Isaiah 66: 13.

Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care.

Parish Pastoral Council Meeting

Last Sunday, around 60 people came to the parish strategic planning meeting. It was a great time, with a lot of enthusiasm and sharing of ideas among participants.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, and the Parish Council for planning it. Together, we look forward to all of the possibilities that we can be in order to be disciples of Christ.

They worked so hard and we are blessed to have their loving presence at our parish.

We are especially thankful for our second grade teachers, Ewa Jablonska and Cristine Salazar from NCA and Dorothea Tobin from our Religious Education Program, for their kind and patient instruction.

Catholic Charities Mother's Day Second Collection

Sarah* was 21 with two children when she entered the Catholic Charities New Hope Apartments program. Having lived in foster care most of her life, she was seeking to be a good parent and successful adult.

At New Hope, Sarah gained skills in budgeting, parenting, and interviewing. She blossomed before her case manager’s eyes and went on to gain stable employment, enter a healthy marriage and enjoy a peaceful family life.

Catholic Charities serves anyone in need of help throughout Cook and Lake counties, and many of them are mothers with children. Please support the Second Collection Mother’s Day, May 14, or anytime at www.catholiccharities.net/donate.

Heart to Heart Information

Our Heart to Heart Ministry has around 30 members and 11 active volunteers, covering Edgewater/Rogers Park areas. Our volunteers provide companionship to our elderly, many of whom live alone and have a limited support network.

There are six dedicated drivers taking members to doctor appointments, grocery shopping and other errands. Three ministry of care volunteers visit people at home or in their care facility. A volunteer does weekly phone visits with many of our members and another sends thank you letters for monetary and medical equipment donations.

In addition, there continues to be a solid group of volunteers working independently

making sandwiches for the needy.

Our Heart to Heart/Lending Closet phone number is 773-973-5464. Pat Sullivan is available on Monday and Thursday for Heart to Heart inquiries. Her email is psullivan@stgertrudechicago.org. Laurie Hasbrook is available on Tuesday and Thursday for Lending Closet inquiries. She can be emailed at lhasbrook@stgertrudechicago.org.
