News from our Pro & Director of Golf
The new club EZGo carts are coming. We expect delivery mid to late December. With the increased demand for the use of club carts, we have added 5 more to the current inventory. That is not all. Making the move to lithium batteries increases efficiency and decreases the weight of the cart by 300 lbs. That will equate to 12,000 pounds less on the course when all are in use.  That’s not all. Adding the TFM system to the carts provides some great tech.
Golf Genius mobile scoring will be accessed from the cart.  Geofencing will stop the cart in the areas defined as no-drive zones and GPS to pinpoint distances while on the course.

That is not all. For those that enjoy a little background music, Bluetooth speakers will be in all carts. We are excited about the delivery of our new fleet and the added experience it will provide the members.

Sincerely,
Derek Morrison, PGA Pro
Director of Golf Operations

News from the SMWGA-18 Holers

The Sugar Mill Women's Golf Association 18 Hole Division began its 47th season with the first major tournament, the Silver Cups competition, held on October 29 and 30.
The Silver Cups were donated by early members of Sugar Mill Country Club. The tournament was originally called the Margaret Drinkle Tournament in honor of the member who donated the first cup. As the membership grew, the Drinkle Cup II was added. Maitland Knox, President of the First Bank of New Smyrna Beach, gave the First Bankers Cup in honor of his wife Wanda. The Sugar Mill Cup was later donated to recognize the winner of the Championship Flight. The winners of the tournament this season were: Sugar Mill Cup, Millie Hagan; Drinkle Cup I, Roseanne Vezzi; Drinkle Cup II, Robin Fisher; and First Bankers Cup, Francine Pomerleau. Their names will be engraved on the cups displayed in the showcase of the Sunrise Grill.
The VIPS (Volusia InterClub Players) held their first competition at Victoria Hills on November 2. Seven players from each club were allowed to compete. Donna Collins, Grace Tshanakas, Karen Abbenante, and Betsy Corey scored low enough to put Sugar Mill in 1st Place. The next competition will be at Cypress Head on December 7. Eight players from each team will be eligible to compete.
The golf association held its Opening Scramble, Luncheon, and Meeting on November 5. New members were introduced and the reports of committee chairs were presented. Scramble winners were: Flight 1, Jean Castello, Fran Freem, Joan Ludka, and Pat Roadarmel; Flight 2, Gale Campisi, Kathy Coombs, Gail Miller, and Bernie Woodsum.
After a very successful season last year, the SMWGA/18 is again hosting a series of 6 Sunday afternoons of social golf, cocktails, and dinner. The Kickoff of the 18/9 and Dine season was held on Friday, November 13. The competition is open to all men and women golf members of SMCC. You do not need to be a member of the Ladies 9 or 18 hole groups to participate. We welcome everyone. You may sign up as an individual or a twosome. Pairings will be handled by the Golf Shop. The next 18/9 and Dine is scheduled for Sunday, December 13.
The Seagals held their second competition at Sugar Mill on November 18. Our Sugar Mill team defeated Club De Bonmont 53 to 37. The next match is scheduled for December 11.
The Holiday Scramble will took place on December 3 with 9 and 18 hole members attending a luncheon following the morning golf competition. Members of both groups plan to bring unwrapped toys to the luncheon. Gifts of Love will distribute the toys to local children during the Christmas season.

Upcoming events : December 10 - Low Gross, Low Net
                                  December 17 - Winter Waltz
December 31 - Individual Stableford points

Notes from the Niners

Although inclement weather cancelled play for this year's Buddy/Buddy tournament, we stayed true to the theme " Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and participants gathered for a fantastic luncheon on the 12th of November. Thank you, Alice Schneider and Penny Barry, for orchestrating the event. Fortunately, this winter's first cold weather snap decided not to stick around for our WGA 9/18-hole Holiday Scramble, Putting League and Luncheon on December 3rd. Members donated unwrapped toys for " Gifts of Love" again this year and collected cash donations for the NSB High School Jazz Band as they were unable to perform for us this year due to COVE-19. Holiday music was provided by SMCC's very own Ron Case. Kudos to Gail Miller and Roz Case for again co-chairing this successful WGA event.

A very warm welcome to our newest member, Peggy Padalino.

Remaining events for the month of December include:

10 December - Low Net in Each Flight
11 December - Nine and Dine (Marna and Bob Ward will host. The sign-up sheet is located on our Nin-Hole Division Bulletin Board in the Tournament Room.)

Many thanks to Mrs. Kaylene Curtis -

RAINBOWS end at Sugar Mill CC
A note from the Tennis Chair Barb Hubbard:
SMCC Members,

We had our Opening Dining and Round Robin on 14 November where we had a wonderful turnout. We had all of the tennis and pickleball courts filled and we had people waiting to play. We welcomed quite a few new members who were very impressed with the fun and comradery had by all. Discussions were had on how well the ladies tennis signups are being managed with our new sign up application, so our plans are to add a similar signup list for the Men's tennis. We hope to add Pickleball to the new app in the future as well.

Our next social is 14 December and it will also be a Round Robin play with a Pizza party to follow.

Tennis Pro Steve Schwartz has also received new pickleball paddles so please stop in at the tennis pro shack.

Reminder:
Save - the - Date of 10 March 2021 for the tennis/pickleball tournament to support Swing for Cancer. If you are interested in sponsoring the tennis/pickleball players, please reach out to Barbara Hubbard. Stay on the look out for more details.

Thank you if advance

News from Tennis / Pickleball Pro - Steve Schwartz
Member play at Tennis Courts and Pickleball Courts has been booming. Every morning and afternoon our members are enjoying our beautiful facility. Even though the bad weather did considerable damage, with a lot of work and many hours everything was restored to its pristine condition.
On Friday 11/14, our opening round attracted so many members, some had to sit and wait to play. Dinner followed, and as always it was top notch.
Remember the newest and most powerful Pickleball paddles and Tennis Racquets are in stock. Small amounts so hurry and order one.

Sugar Mill an “Activities Hub”: 20 Minutes to Fun!
by Mike Schmidt (SMCC Member )
" MY GOLF"
As I told you last month in the Sugar Mill Newsletter, I’ve never been one to sit around much, reading a book while lying in a hammock or on the beach on a nice balmy day. Nothing wrong with that; just not my way-of-going. Rather, for me, I’d be in my Adirondack guide boat rowing on mosquito lagoon at Canaveral seashore... or shotgunning sporting clay targets at the range off Pioneer Trail...or flinging arrows out of my recurve bow at 3D animal targets set in the woods near Daytona...or...you get the picture! Some might call this “frenetic living”, but I call it fun! And what makes this all so possible? Living in New Smyrna Beach, with Sugarmill as my “Activities Hub”: so many things just 20 minutes away.

                                                “Like what?”, you say.

Well, let’s start with golf, a pretty obviously “20 minutes away”: but not just golf, but “My Golf’.

Judging from my handicap, (~13-18) in any week, day, or on any given shot (i.e., upper level mediocre) and my “Doomed-from-the-Start” signature move (wrapping the club around me like a baseball swing, making it all but impossible to bring the club down in any way but over-the -top, on some sort of inconsistent plane into the ball) you’d be amazed to learn that I actually started playing golf at an early age...about 10. We found an old picture of me swinging an iron; left handed! Somehow I got changed to a “righty”, but obviously to no good. I played with my parents almost every Sunday afternoon. They thought it best if we waited ‘till after 4pm so they could play nine holes for fifty cents...and me for twenty-five. Needless to say, no lessons were given, no balls were new, no clubs matched, we walked and carried our bag. But hey... it was Playing Golf!

What could have been a major breakthrough for me and my game (repeat, “could have been”) occurred when I was 13 and got a job as a caddie at the Oshkosh Country Club in Wisconsin, about five miles out of town. I thought it paid pretty well: $2.50 for a single for 18 holes. The bags were almost as big as me and leather, and always held upwards of two dozen extra balls, rain gear, umbrella, and a pair of shoes too....sometimes extra laces. The closest thing to padding on the strap was a piece of sheep skin, worn. If you’ve seen the movie caddie shack, multiply all that stuff about 10X and move it another log unit to the left. Geezzze, what a place: rough and unruly! We were never allowed more than 10feet out of the shack, and especially could go no where near the pool or tennis courts where the members’ daughters hung out. We rarely got a tip. And, unfortunately, we never could watch lessons. So, I “never got taught”, as they say. But, we were allowed to play on Monday and Friday mornings, from daybreak to 11am, and we did. Everything was wet, wet, wet...including the 3” rough. What fun!

To caddie or play, we hitched hiked to the club in the mornings and hitched back late afternoon. But me, I’d put on a shorts and swim and troll the entire creek system ‘till dark, diving and feeling for balls...which I’d sell back to the pro for ten cents each...shag balls. The memories of being all alone on that quiet course as evening fell have never left me; and so now, that’s part of my “My Golf” approach to golf at Sugar Mill. Details now to follow. (An aside: I never knew what happened to most all of those train wreck caddie buddies; but one, my good friend, became the President of a venture capitol group, so...).

I play in one “guys’ group” and the Men’s League almost every week, plus the Events. These are the real deal: Regulation Play: formats, rules, points, money, prizes, anxiety, stress, big groups. But don’t get me wrong: fun, team play, camaraderie, laughs...and sometimes you win $12!

But did you ever notice how little the driving range is used in the late afternoon? Pretty deserted. I am one of those “practicers”, (scientists and engineers, they say) sometimes hitting only wedges, like Golf Digest says you should do most often...but other times just wailing away with the driver, watching yellow balls fly long... right, left and periodically dead straight. Stand way on the right side and try the challenge of driving it straight down the tree line. Or, sometimes I play the course, hole-by-hole: remembering and visualizing a hole and estimating the distances of the shots I hit and changing clubs appropriately ‘till I get within “gimme range” on the vicarious green. Fun and probably helpful, I think. But, then, I’ve also noticed that the good players, (the “single-digit guys” as they’re known), are rarely on the range wailing balls with me. Hummmmm... Are they Night-Practicers?

The chipping and putting green after dinner is also a place of solitude. What a wonderful thing to have minutes away. There’s almost no reason one can’t become a better...perhaps even a moderately adequate...putter. Play it hole-by-hole and keep your score, or play my game: 5 balls chipped to five Different holes, and then putted ‘till in. The goals: never more than a two putt and a good score of eight putts or better. Then, I’ll do one-ball-long-putting (sometimes really long putting), again always trying for “two putts or under”. Or try chipping with different clubs to find the right one for you: maybe even a hybrid, like Tiger uses at times? You’re all alone with no one watching, so Play! Once in a while I’ll commit, (usually after a fine round blown by a missed two footer on #9 Red) to multiple evenings of “Knee Knocker Practice”: 4, 3, 2, 1 (yup, 1) footers practice rounds. I’ve even tried the Jack Nicholas “20-in-a-row or you can’t go home” drill, but I feel it’s important that I shouldn’t let the battery in the cart go dead too often or drive at night, right?

But best, for me, is how nice it is to walk the course in the early evening, (remember those caddy days...) just with a putter/3 wood/6 iron... or maybe just the 6 iron and two balls like you did as a kid.  I’m almost always alone, maybe a couple of others. And the key word here, again, is “playing” golf: no score, no pars, no bets, judges or handicaps to figure-in or complain about...and no teammates to let down (again). Play two balls...OK. Play a two-ball “virtual match” against your cousin in Chicago...OK. Take a “do over”...OK. Take another “do over”... OK again. The Take Home message here: sometimes it’s fun to just Play the game.

And, lastly, the place you can always have the course to yourself is in the the practice sand bunker. I’ve only seen three people ever use It... probably why most of us flail-and-fail at that phase of our game!

So, what’s the closest activity in the Sugar Mill Activities Hub? Golf. It’s why we’re here. And all of these games I play in my “My Golf” format are just two minutes from our home in The Meadows. A young boy’s dream come true: all the practice balls you want to hit...all the chips and putts you’d want to try...and a beautiful empty course to stroll alone as the sun sets. Nice.

And next month’s topic: bird watching...or maybe shotgunning or rowing...or, yup, probably archery.

Regards and keep having Fun. Mike
