FROM THE YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN

Hi! My name is Abby Ott and I am excited to be the new Youth Services Librarian at the Shorewood Public Library. I have worked as a youth services librarian for the past four years and prior to librarianship I was an art educator in and around the Milwaukee area for five years. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with both my MLIS and BFA in Art Education.

I love combining my prior knowledge of art making methods and the classroom with new ways of diversifying and including all children’s needs in a library setting. I have a special interest in providing opportunities for children to learn from each other and build autonomy in making choices and learning through new experiences. I am also excited to be a part of a library team that cares deeply about equity, diversity, and inclusion and I strive to develop our children’s collection and programming to reflect these important values. I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone as I continue to learn and grow as a librarian within the Shorewood community!

FAREWELL, LIZZIE!

This November, we say goodbye to Virtual Engagement Librarian Lizzie Hjelle. Lizzie has been a librarian at the Shorewood Public Library for the past 2.5 years. During that time, she expanded our Adult World Languages Collection and Romance Fiction Collection, co-hosted the Shorewood Stacks Podcast, and was the voice behind the library’s monthly newsletter and social media.

“I am so grateful to all of the wonderful people I have had the pleasure of working with during my time in Shorewood. I have truly enjoyed helping the community connect to new books, new digital resources, and each other.”

Please join us in wishing Lizzie well on her next chapter!

WHAT WE'RE READING

Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang

When an American smog cloud spreads across the earth, the sun is blocked out and crops fail, creating a global famine. Land of Milk and Honey follows a woman who is hired as a chef for incredibly wealthy people on an Italian mountain that receives partial sunlight. She loses her sense of identity and boundaries through the role forced upon her by her toxic employer. Eventually she realizes that the pleasure she finds in the abundance of the mountain is inauthentic. C Pam Zhang's novel reminds us that capitalism is the antithesis of pleasure.
