Message from the President
This is an exciting year for the division. Evolved from the Lean Division (2003-2019), the recently renamed "Operational Excellence Division" strives to serve all industrial engineers who have been practitioners, researchers, or learners in the domain of Lean, Six Sigma, and various other operational excellence methodologies. Being the new elected team of the division officers, we are proud and humbled by the fact that the Lean Division was one of the early division established at IISE with more than 3,000 members for many years. Following
this tradition, the Operational Excellence Division will continue supporting the Engineering Lean & Six Sigma (ELSS) Conference in September and the IISE Annual Conference in May with a Lean Six Sigma Track. During the Annual Conference, the division will recognize your great effort in Operational Excellence via three competitions/awards: Best Practice Award, Best Student Paper Award, and Best Teaching Award. Would you like to be recognized? Do you have someone to recommend? We want to hear from you! We will be ready for your nominations and submissions soon.
With this new team of division officers, we are increasing our communication efforts with division members through social media (IISE Connect, LinkedIn OpEx Division Group) to be more interactive and engaging. We are eager to provide more information and better technical content, and more importantly, we would love to hear your stories, too! Come join us in the discussions, and you may find some useful tips or good information to boost your operational excellence work. In addition to social media, webinars, and newsletters, the division holds Town Hall meetings at the IISE Annual Conference and ELSS Conference which is coming up soon. We look forward to meeting many of you in person at the ELSS Conference on September 23-25 in Houston!

In Memory of J Temple Black
On
May 16, 2019 the Institute lost a long-time member, colleague, contributor and friend as J Temple Black died just 25 days short of his 81
st
birthday. J was active over his career with the Manufacturing and Design and Operational Excellence (Lean) Divisions of the Institute. A Professor Emeritus at Auburn University, he will be remembered as lead author of
Degarmo's Materials and Processes in Manufacturing
and for his pioneering research in metal cutting and lean manufacturing. His scholarship and professional contributions were recognized when he was elected a Fellow of IISE in 1999. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Born in Rahway, NJ he developed a passion for industrial and manufacturing engineering as an undergraduate at Lehigh University and subsequently received an MS from West Virginia University and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. While his early work was in materials processing be became interested in manufacturing systems from his observations of how Japanese automobiles were produced. This led to his research and books on lean manufacturing. J's enthusiasm for the subject caused him to teach his lean course in retirement and continue to provide guest lectures as late as fall 2018. He also had a creative side that saw him author poetry and record his own songs.
